M-Audio Digital Out (A/52 )in Panther doesn't work

Love your program. Great work.

I have been copying my DVD's to my PowerMac to make it a video server (I already use it as my music server). I can play the DVDs directly from the disk using VideoLAN and get 5.1 digital output fine using M-Audio Revolution sound card. However when I copy the DVD to my hard disk and play it, I only get the stereo PCM output to work on the digital output of the card. I get the following message when I switch the output in the in the menu/audio/audiodevice/1:Revolution Digital Out (Digital A52): "coreaudio: failed to set buffer size: [nope]"

I get the same message on my M-audio Sonica. I emailed M-audio and they indicated that it is unknown if they are coming out with an upgrade for Panther.

They posted an update today, coincidently, but it only works with DVD Player. They specifically state that they don't support VideoLan. I have not been able to get DVD Player to work with a copy of a DVD on my hard drive whereas VideoLan works beautifully expect for the AC3 digital out. My preference is the VideoLan Player. If it works with the DVD Player it should work with VideoLan (I would think).

I also get the same error when I try to play a DVD over sonica in vlc 0.6.2!

On http://www.m-audio.de you can find a driver for sonica that works pretty good in panther but only with the AC3Edition of vlc (you can get it also on http://www.m-audio.de).

VCL 0.7.0 beta does not appear to address this issue. Any ideas, pref changes?

DJ- I tried this before I posted my problem. It didn't fix it. Still get the same error msg I posted earlier.

Could you post a complete log from the messages window?
Just start playing the file, pause it immediatly after changing to digital output. open the messages window and copy the contents.

Hi DJ,
I tried this before. The Sonica is audio device 1: Digital (A/52). I set the preferece in coreaudio to 1. I obtain the following:

coreaudio: failed to set buffer size: [nope]

and then shortly thereafter I get an "unexpectedly quit" error.

I might add that I always get an "unexpectedly quit" error when I use "Open Disk". I am able to open the disk if I select "Open File" and open the Video_TS folder.

I am also a new SONICA user on Mac OSX 10.3.1

I am getting the exact same error message when I run DVD's with 5.1 surround sound

I am currently using the M-Audio VLC Edition (v0.4.3) for my dvds. and it plays 5.1 sound perfectly but it is a pretty antique app when it comes to the VLC features nowadays.

VLC is an amazing app, I hope you's can fix this audio bug soon :)

Yes I just loaded it today and watched a couple dvd's. My 5.1 decoder with my speakers automatically detects the Dolby Digital and uses that format with VLC M-Audio edition, it does not work with any other version of VLC tho, I keep getting that "buffer" error.

10.3.1 is a pretty buggy OS all around, some apps won't work and some do sometimes, very strange.

Same Error using G5 (10.3.1) with Logitech z680 sound system, works well with Apple DVD player, with VLC no sound with the same error message.

And than then there is no audio completely throughout the ststem, until restart.

we over at htmug.com are also having the same problem with the sonica-
vlc 0.4.3 ac3 edition will output AC3 to sonica but wont play some
of my video codecs.. 0.6.2 still no go. this just confirmed on 10.3.2.
i even tried all released between 0.4.3 and 0.6.2.

you guys need any donations or anything we can do to help get this fixed?
you obviously have the best player on the market right now.

thanks

We need for apple to donate some Documentation on playing multichannel audio via Coreaudio (This is the least documented part of the already not so well documented CoreAudio)

Of course it would also help if i actually had a multichannel setup, but i'm not asking that :)

I really wish you could obtain that informa†ion from apple. Your test2 works so much better and it would be great to get the audio working as well. Could you describe in some additional detail what you need? I know some people at apple and will try to also ask.

Documentation on sending multichannel output to multichannel devices. CAC3 and DTS audio playing and device stream selection.

normal stereo etc. is pretty well known (not documented either), but multichannel is completly different and not many people have toyed with it. Since there is no documentation, we don't know the 'correct' way to direct these devices.

I'm getting the same problem that none of the test players resolve. I'm on 10.2.8 Jag mainly using 0.6.2. Everything was fine until i upgraded from QT 6.3 to QT 6.5 and now I get the coreaudio error and no 5.1 sound output via my M-Audio Sonica. I am geting around the problem by using vlc 0.4.3 AC3 but it's not as pretty to look at and has less features.
Can't find out how to revert back to before QT 6.4 as there is no uninstaller for 6.5 that i can find yet.
Here's the report:
