Should I start a new thread or is this not the right place to contribute information about this problem ?

Hi, thanks for the reply, I just saw this from you! Ok so I checked VLC, and the instructions on the previous page say to go to tools, but I found the messages section under windows. Within there I could not find a place to set anything to a Vibrosity of #2, but I engaged the debug log and it put into text what happens when I play the file. It is long. Thanks!

I now have 6 shows from just the last 3 months that don't play DTS and all of them are audio codec " A/52 B Audio (aka E-AC3) (eac3)"

What is going on! surely I'm not the only one having this issue. Like someone said this is amazons codec? and I'm assuming VLC is not decoding it properly?

Well E-AC3 is obviously not DTS, so...

Sorry when I say DTS I should have said in 5.1 or surround sound. My receiver supports dolby digital plus. Is this software related? I will try some other programs. I'm extremely frustrated, I wish someone would help me, I've provided everything that was asked of me.

I started using Dolby Home Theater in all my media PCs, some are Windows 10 others are Windows 7 - all are 64 bit, All are high level Gigabyte GA 990FXA UD7, two are Rev 1.0 ad two are Rev 3.0. All are running FX8350 CPUs with various Radio video cards. All worked prior to Dolby Home Theater 4. Every VLC since 2.2.8 and on has been tested and all have failed mainy on MKV files that worked fine before Dolby was added.

I like the audio control Dolby Home Theater 4 gives me to configure my many different audio systems - one is SONY DA5700ES Receiver, the rest are multi amp variations from simple stereo to five amps running bi-amping 5.1 to 7.2 mainly full sized speakers. I also play SACD music using PS3 to my SONY!

Too fix this problem I am now using the old Windows Media Player and its latest codex which so far have all worked well with no problems. So the old Media player is now working on many files the choke VLC?

The problem is that the audio playback in almost any configuration hiccups and skips through the audio on all the available audio tracks, the condition is too bad to even try to work around.

It does not happen to all MKV media but it seems to happen to about 50% of my MKV files in both movies and TV shows that are HD content.

I have been a proponent of VLC for many years telling all my friends just how wonderful VLC is and how it plays EVERYTHING! Now it is failing so much that I finally removed VLC from most of my systems and am now using Windows Media Player - which is playing everything that I have tested to date.

Seems that a lot of other users are also losing faith in VLC - is this the beginning of the end for my most favorite app of all time! Is this related to E-AC3?

Well I downloaded 2 other programs, kodi, and mvp or something like that, bu they also don't play in 5.1. So its not just happening on VLC, I just figured the community here is most advanced to help solve the problem, even if it is hardware related, but that seems to not be the case. I can try another hdmi cable, maybe its not a 1.3 cable ? idunno

Every VLC since 2.2.8 and on has been tested and all have failed mainy on MKV files that worked fine before Dolby was added.

I like the audio control Dolby Home Theater 4 gives me to configure my many different audio systems - one is SONY DA5700ES Receiver, the rest are multi amp variations from simple stereo to five amps running bi-amping 5.1 to 7.2 mainly full sized speakers driven from my PC audio outputs.

Too fix this problem I am now using the Media Player Classic v1.8.3 and its latest codex which so far have all worked well with no problems. So the old Media player is working on many files the choke VLC? While the MPC is working it does not work as well as VLC for normal operations especially when loading files.

The problem is that the audio playback hiccups and skips through the audio on all the available audio tracks. I spent many hours trying variations in VLC Tools but I found nothing to help out the audio issue as well as trying new VLC loads with all selections set to initial defaults.

It does not happen to all MKV my media but it seems to happen to about 50% of my MKV files in both movies and TV shows that are HD content.

I have been a proponent of VLC for many years telling all my friends just how wonderful VLC is and how it plays EVERYTHING! Now it is failing so much that I finally removed VLC from most of my systems.

UPDATE - If I turn Dolby OFF temporarily many of the reported VLC Audio problems go away, still my audio does shut off if the audio track volume drops to near nothing (Low background music or background audio sound) but returns once normal audio resumes but with a very slight delay. Removing Dolby requires a very complex custom reload to put it back on or a complete backup and restore. Tested with latest VLC 3x.

UPDATE - Using VLC with audio outs from PC to audio RCA inputs to my SONY DA5700ES receiver does not seem to have ANY audio problems with Any of my media files even with Dolby Home Theater 4 turned ON! VLC audio problem has been noted on all systems where PC audio outputs to Hi-Fi audio amps are used, I use Crown and AudioSource amps on all my 'Dumb' systems (no receiver to clean things up?). So good news is that users with Receivers (with Dolby support?) may be unaffected by the audio skipping and playback issues.

Well Im back again, downloading another show from amazon that has the DDP format, I already know that this EAC3 will only play in stereo. My receiver is Onkyo TX SR606 and is capable of decoding DDP. I have had no problems playing all media for 5 years in surround sound. Why is no one helping on this thread, I am providing all information asked of me to further diagnose this issue.

Also I did research and the cable can not be the issue. it is V 1.3 as well. I figured maybe an old cable but is is from 2016...

Hello,

i'm new, and i registered because i have the same issue.. lot's of movies that are 5.1 play in stereo but i did not know why. others play perfect 5.1 on my Marantz reciever connected with SPIDF ( because my HDMI connector did brake )

Only today i discovered the movies are not in AC3 anymore but E-AC3, grrr why do they change codecs when everything played so well and sounded awesome before ...

so i also would like VLC player to raise the priority on this :) maybe there are much more people like me ( i know 2 already in my friendscircle who have their pc's connected with optics because they don't own the latest and greatest money can buy.

Best regards,

PS : if Videolan does not make it any priority, can anybody give me names of players where i can play E-AC3 movies in surround via SPDIF ? i love VLC but if i can't get 5.1, i have no problem to switch to other players for that content.

I just spent $800 on a new DENON AVR 3500 Receiver thinking that was the problem, since my last ONKYO 606 was from 2008. Well this problem still exists! Tested a EAC3 mkv yesterday and it did not detect it and played it in stero, just like the last receiver.

I am stumped. If VLC supports DD+, and my hdmi 1.3 Supports it, then where is the problem. I can't believe that not one single person has solved this and reported back. There have been over 10 people posting with this exact issue.

Windows / wasapi ?

Wondering if that's not that reason

Code: Select all

case VLC_CODEC_EAC3: wf->SubFormat = _KSDATAFORMAT_SUBTYPE_IEC61937_DOLBY_DIGITAL_PLUS; wf->Format.nChannels = 2; wf->dwChannelMask = KSAUDIO_SPEAKER_5POINT1; break;

BOYS WE HAVE MADE A BREAKTHROUGH!!!!!!!

so I got 3 other media players yesterday and all did the same thing playing it in STEREO. But then When I was in KODI, In the audio settings I was able to select passthrough/no passthrough. I could also see that it said this file was a dolby 5.1. So I selected no passthrough (which means KODI does the decoding, and sends it as a PCM stream. Ofcourse my receiver did not detect surround sound and switch to anything, here is the key. I manually changed it to multi channel input. And there we go. I had surround sound! Now Ive never been able to see any options for passthrough audio. Im assuming that is maybe done by selecting under audio mendu the output as HDMI - which would be decoded in vlc and output as pcm, or HDMI(encoded) meaning "passthrough" which sends it to reciver to decode in which case it will detect. Now the question is why when sending this encoded DD+ format, does it not make it to the receiver in this way to be recognized.

Hi!

I am also having problems with E-AC3 audio and an Yamaha RX-V673 receiver connected via HDMI to my MacBook Pro. I never had problems with VLC and other audio codes before in this setup. I am on macOS. I tried many versions of VLC and also the nightlies. Not working.

Is there any news on this?

Thanks,

There's is NO EAC3 over SPDIF because the standard does not allow it. Either you receive PCM audio (max 2 channels) OR AC3 (max 5 channels).
If you think that's working elsewhere, that's because they downmix & re-encode into AC3...

Thank you for your reply!

Sorry, I don't know what exactly to log. The media is MKV files. I am trying many different files. Looks like some older ones with E-AC3 are working, but none of the newer ones. What should I log?

Thanks,

Hi!

This file works:

Code: Select all

Format : Matroska Format version : Version 4 File size : 1.38 GiB Duration : 1h 0mn Overall bit rate : 3 258 Kbps Encoded date : UTC 2019-06-11 02:39:26 Writing application: mkvmerge v29.0.0 ('Like It Or Not') 64-bit Writing library : libebml v1.3.6 + libmatroska v1.4.9 Audio ID : 2 Format : E-AC-3 Format/Info : Enhanced AC-3 Commercial name : Dolby Digital Plus Codec ID : A_EAC3 Duration : 1h 0mn Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 640 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel layout : L R C LFE Ls Rs Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Frame rate : 31.250 fps (1536 SPF) Compression mode : Lossy Delay relative to video: 24ms Stream size : 278 MiB (20%) Language : English Service kind : Complete Main Default : Yes Forced : No

This one doesn't:

Code: Select all

Format : Matroska Format version : Version 4 File size : 5.34 GiB Duration : 1h 39mn Overall bit rate : 7 653 Kbps Encoded date : UTC 2019-10-29 07:32:04 Writing application: mkvmerge v21.0.0 ('Tardigrades Will Inherit The Earth') 64-bit Writing library : libebml v1.3.5 + libmatroska v1.4.8 Audio ID : 2 Format : E-AC-3 Format/Info : Enhanced AC-3 Commercial name : Dolby Digital Plus Codec ID : A_EAC3 Duration : 1h 39mn Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 640 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel layout : L R C LFE Ls Rs Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Frame rate : 31.250 fps (1536 SPF) Compression mode: Lossy Stream size : 457 MiB (8%) Language : English Service kind : Complete Main Default : Yes Forced : No

I can't see any pattern in the files that work or don't work. But they consistently work or don't.

Thanks,
Horst

I'm experiencing a similar issue with an E-AC3 audio source. The file is always played with stereo sound, even though I am connected to the AV receiver through HDMI. Surround sound works just fine with AC3 or DTS audio sources using VLC or WIndows Media Player, or E-AC3 audio sources using WIndows Media Player (but not VLC).

Here are some details:

Environment infos

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 10 VLC version: 3.0.11 Sound system: Onkyo AV Receiver HT-R380 Connection setup: HDMI cable between PC and AV receiver (audio + image), HDMI cable between AV receiver and TV (image only).
VLC audio settings:
Image
(note: I tried both with and without the "Use S/PDIF when available" checkbox with the same audio)

Input file audio codec infos:

Code: Select all

Codec: A/52 B Audio (aka E-AC3) (eac3) Channels: 3F2M/LFE Sample rate: 48000 Hz Bits per sample: 32
VLC Logs: https://pastebin.com/raw/rkRhjNaG

Any idea why the stream is played in stereo, and how to fix that on my side if possible?
Thank you.
