Old skin (classic 0.8.*) on new version (0.9.2)

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Old skin (classic 0.8.*) on new version (0.9.2)

Postby pseudo555 » 17 Sep 2008 19:13

Hello every one,

I would like to remove the new skin which comes with 0.9.2 (I find it really ugly, even if it's a lot of time to do it, and really not usser friendly - it took me over 5 minutes to find the rewin/fast forward feature ) in order to restore the classic one from 0.8.* branch :
Image

I think it's possible to revert, but i don't find the solution (without recreate an entire new skin).

So how can i restore the old theme ?

Thank's in advance

It's not a theme. We used to use wxWidgets to build the default interface on windows and linux. Now we use Qt. You can try downloading the source code and building the wxWidgets interface if you want. Other than that you'll have to stick to the Qt interface (which is way easier to use than the old one).

Personally ?
I find this is a "too much" :
- sound control is too big for me, the previous one is enough for me.
- Rewind & fast forward are too hidden for me,
- Icons use in preferences are too big.

Except theses things i think :
- The quality of the picture is poorer than previous build (it can be just an illusion)
- When you use full screen and want to get back, vlc use maximized windows, not original size (probably a bug )
- When I use skin, lot's of option from context menu disappear (probably a bug too)

I know this new skin (and lot's of other features) are a lot hour of works, and people always complain when changes appear.

A little talk (off topic) :
Some people likes "light feature", like the google webpage or the power of a shell, other likes to have a beautiful design like igoogle or vista... Like differences between office 2003 and 2007 (on the GUI only).
In my case, i think the previous interface was sufficient : everything was clear and well defined.
But I know, this is a stupid behavior.

Me kinda like the new interface and all, but CloudStalker thinks that it would be a big improvment if there were to be better intergration between the default interface and skins2. That way if user wanted larger/smaller buttons, ect, they could find or develope a skin that'll have those things and still retain the features and functions of the default interface.

- If you want a lighter volume slider, just use the option to have a normal slider in the preferences.
- Rewind and fast might get an icon in next version but most USERS asked to REMOVE it, because it was confusing...
- Preferences? What kind of resolution do you have ?

- Picture quality is the same, except postprocessing
- Can't reproduce the maximized behaviour
- What do you miss?

If the preferences icons are too big for you just check "advanced preferences" and you'll have the old preferences layout.

Thank's for theses hints ;)

Try without integrate the video in the interface, i can easily reproduce this bug on a xp sp3 in a virtual pc (my laptop use xp sp3 too).

I notice some mistake in French translation (you probably can contact the person who can correct it):
- nombre d'images entre deux vérifications de mise à jour (replace 'image' by 'jour')
- politique de téléchargement des couvertures (replace 'couverture' by 'mise à jour')
I think you're probably not the translator, but you can contact him/her faster than me ;)

Another bug :
When I tickle the 'qt interface' box in interface/main interface, I can't restart vlc anymore without suppress its configuration files (application data/vlc/*)

Without integration of video in interface is the issue. Ok.

I think the real issue (for people like me) is how to port 0.8.x skins to 0.9.2. I want to use my "Blended" skin. :x

For me the "Blended" skin works as it should, I guess. The playlist and equalizer windows miss, because you didn't add them in the skin as far as I can see it.

Where EXACTLY is that option? I've searched in all options, simple and advanced, but I can't find it

What ?
Go to Preferences=>All=>Interface=>Main Interfaces=>Qt in the left pane, in the right, uncheck "non-native..."

the old interface is NOT a skin. You can't make a skin that imitates exactly the old interface.

I much prefer the 0.8.* skin. It may seem a little minimalistic the first time you use it but then you get the logic of it. It works well as a default out-of-box skin. It's neat and unclunky. Personally I use VLC for a number of awkward video formats and for some streaming. For those uses, it's nice to have an unintrusive interface.

I recommend that the VLC team switches back to this interface and skin for their 1.0 release. Do a vote on it if you want. I don't like the new skin too much - I've reverted back to 0.8.* and will stick with it if the new ugly skin is kept in new versions.

Also wxWidgets looks and performs way better than Qt on Windows.
