Optical audio and Panther – no go?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Optical audio and Panther – no go?

Postby OfiExtreme » 01 Dec 2003 23:53

I'm using Mac OS X 10.3 with a 5.1 speaker setup (Logitech 680-Z) via the optical audio port on my G5. For some reason no sound is played. This is what the Console says when I'm trying that config:

[00000190] main input: playlist item `/Volumes/Infinity/test.avi'
[00000193] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:448000
[00000179] coreaudio audio output error: failed to set buffer size: [nope]
[00000190] access_file input: closing `/:///Volumes/Infinity/test.avi'

Ooookie... the result seem to varies a bit... now I get this (the first part is from the VLC error message and the second from the Console):

coreaudio: Could not set the stream format: [!hog]
coreaudio: InitDevice failed

[00000180] main input: playlist item `/Volumes/Infinitytest.avi'
[00000183] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:448000
[00000179] coreaudio audio output error: AudioStreamAddPropertyListener failed: [nope]
[00000179] coreaudio audio output error: InitDevice failed
[00000180] access_file input: closing `/:///Volumes/Infinity/test.avi

I may add that everything work alright when using USB speakers (Sound Sticks).

The problem appears with both the 0.6.2 and the 0.7-test1 version of VLC.

Any ideas?

You actually HAVE optical audio?
All reports so far are from people who ran into trouble because VLC was trying to use digital out but they didn't have that. But I understand you do?

That's correct – I have optical audio. The 5.1 setup is connected through a toslink cable via the built in optical audio port.

Other applications seem to be able to handle it so it suppose the speaker system works as it should.

Very identical setup and audio is a no no, infact it will make the rest of the audio dead until restart.

It's "good" to see that I'm not the only one with this problem. I might add that I looked through the suggested thread above, but with no luck.

Is there anyone out there that can run VLC with an optical output?

Dolby Digital data

Postby Vlad » 13 Dec 2003 09:20

It's possible for me to get the sound data out on my G5 through the optical, but that will give liba52 downmixed data for a stereo out config. What I am wondering if it isn't possible for VLC to pipe the digital audio data through the audio port to be decoded externally (By my Logitech Z-680, what a surprise ;) ) as Apple's DVD player does. I tried doing this (by shutting off A/52 downmix, checking S/PDIF and switching to the optical out) but only get this in Console:

Code: Select all
