Can't play wmv or mp3 files from attachment

Postby esmo » 02 Feb 2009 23:07

I am running xp pro sp3 and outlook express for email. I installed VLC yesterday and everything seems to be ok except for playing a file sent as an attachment from within the email. If I save it to the desktop, it runs properly from there. I have double checked the associations which must be properly configured because it works from the desktop, and the icon associated with the files is the VLC cone. I don't know if this will also be true of other file types because these are the only ones I have received so far. How can this be fixed? Thanks

When it opens in VLC what does it do? What are VLC's messages?

The message is "This file does not have associated with it. Create an association" The association does exist and the file is identified by the VLC icon.

Correction. The message reads "This file does not have a program associated " etc

OK, so it is an Outlook Express file association issue. This has been a known issue for a while:

It is possible that modifying to VLC's associated file extensions in the Registry would allow it to work.

As one of mobile devices fans, I was looking for a valuable all-in-one converter that not only can rip DVD and convert video, but also backup my ipod files to my computer. Recently my friend recommend me the Best DVD Converter Suite — Aiseesoft DVD Converter Suite that can meet my needs. Now I will share with you.

What is needed is a file type action of "Open" for this to work.

Open up your windows file explorer.
Click Tools > Folder Options > File Types > WMV

You should have VLC already selected as the Opens with application, but likely don't have an "Open" action.

Click Advanced.
Click New and fill in as follows:

Code: Select all

Action: Open Application...: "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --started-from-file "%1" Use DDE: checked DDE Message: (leave blank) Application: vlc DDE Application...: (leave blank) Topic: System
Click OK
Click OK
Click Close

Done. That should work for you. If you have problems with other file types you will have to add an Open action for them too.
