Can't playback HEVC videos

Postby tex4ever » 13 Jan 2017 00:08

Hi, I am really frustrated and struggling around for several hours now to get VLC playing back HVEC videos, I hope somebody can help me.

My problem:
I am trying to playback an 8k video encoded with Adobe Premiere to h265 codec -> as soon as the video starts, I hear the audio is playing, but the video freezes at the first frame.
- My video has a bitrate of 60 MB/s.
- My video has a duration of 57 seconds.
- My video has a size of 397 MB.
- I can playback it with Windows Media Player fine
- When I use the GoPro VR Player and switch to DirectShow, it also playbacks fine.
- So it must be something in VLC. I have the latest version 2.2.4 -> I also tried the nightly build 2.2.5

My system:
I7 6800K
EVGA GTX 1080 8GB
64 GB RAM

I hope, somebody has any idea whats going wrong. ;-)

Thank you!
Philipp

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

I'm having the same issues with hvec exported from premiere. Did you get it figured out?

Thanks

We need a log and a sample file.
Read the post just above yours and apply.

I'm having the same issue with NASA UHD. Here is the log file below via zippyshare. I also have uploaded the following file - "Nasa UHD PID 104 HVEC Unplayable in VLC.ts" to streams.videolan.org/upload

Trac ticket 18099

I just got a laughable response from VLC. Saying my machine is too slow closed the ticket saying they won't fix it.

It's a quad core I7 4790K w/ turbo boost up to 4.4 Ghz, running at 4.0Ghz, with 32 gigs of ram, and a GTX 1070 32 gig with native HEVC hardware support.

For the record, HVEC plays fine with POT PLAYER in both software and hardware acceleration and only VLC doesn't decode HVEC the way it should.

It's easier for them to close out a ticket saying a machine is too slow versus actually fixing the issue.

Super annoyed by VLC, but it appears they are not serious about fixing this issue.

Your hardware is obviously not too slow but try with VLC 3.0.0 nightly build.

And set it to use DXVA:
Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = Automatic

Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = DXVA 2.0

Then save, exit and restart VLC.

And BTW we do need a sample file so please upload one.
Read the instructions in my first post above.

I'm trying to play back this file. VLC draws a couple of frames and then hangs. Windows Media Player appears to use hardware acceleration and plays it back (and its 400 mbps version!) just fine. Here are the settings. I'm suspicious about why it's doing software scaling to resize the video by four pixels. Here's the log:

If what I suggested in my previous post doesn't work then try this with VLC 3.0.0 nightly build.

Set it to use DXVA3 aka D3D11:
Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = D3D11

Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = D3D11 Video Acceleration

Then save, exit and restart VLC.

Works pretty fine for me with a 8000*4000 HEVC video.

Same problem here. I have a Core i7, 16GB of RAM, a GTX970, which definitely supports HVEC, and the latest available version of VLC. I have tried using the various setting recommended to stop this problem to no avail. If I DISABLE hardware acceleration, the problem disappears, but then everything else on my computer gets affected. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this issue???

GTX 970 does not provide HEVC HW decoding

:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

Can you provide some debug logs (as seen above in this thread) ? So we can see if the GPU claims to decoder HEVC or not.

First of all, I really like VLC player. Although it's not perfect, it's a pretty nice alternative to Windows Media Player.

That said, As topic starter I'm also having problems playing videofiles, recorded in H265. But these files aren't even 8k or 4k, not even 2k. Just a 'simple' 1080p video recorded and encoded to H265 with Filmic pro on a Android phone.
The video is playing, but shows distorted and there are two frames visible next to each other in VLC media player. In other video software, like DaVinci Resolve 16, these files don't have any problem playing.
