Hi Res Video not playing

Postby sargan » 20 Aug 2024 13:36

If I play .mov movies they play OK.
If I try to play .mp4 the file is playing looking at the progress bar, but a single frame of video - i.e. video does not play.

I have tried some lower resolution mp4 files - 1280 x 720 29.970 fps AVC they play OK
The ones that won't play are 3840 x 2160 100fps HEVC (drone footage)

Have done a de-install/reinstall.

I do have the Microsoft H.265 codec installed, is there something I need to configure in VLC ?

As a test I tried same files with SPLASH and they play OK.

We need the full log, from the very beginning to the very end. Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, keep the messages window open during the whole process and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

I can see the repeated entry of computer too slow .. but as mentioned plays fine in SPLASH

Here is link to the Processor performance when running certainly not flat-lined, so should be OK

As I said, we need the full complete log from the very beginning to the very end. You need to enable it BEFORE you start the playback. Read my post again.
Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to WeTransfer.com or Disroot.org and then post the link to the file here.

The video is huge it will run for a very long time.

I don’t know if I can cut a small sample out, as it’s not my video don’t know if I can edit a 4K without re-encoding.
I’ll have to investigate a tool to do this.

Once again, you didn't proceed as I ask you to do. Please use the MESSAGES windows as explained in my first post of this thread:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 10#p546110

We need to see the complete opening sequence of the file.

Code: Select all

Format : HEVC Format profile : Main 10@L6.1@High Codec ID : hvc1 Bit rate : 126 Mb/s Width : 3 840 pixels Height : 2 160 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate mode : Constant Frame rate : 100.000 FPS Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 10 bits

HEVC 10 bits @ 100 FPS with 126 Mb/s bitrate.
What is your hardware ? Especially CPU and GPU.

Instructions said to enable logging, set verbose 2, start from beginning and attached the log file it created .. that is what I did.
I did not modify the log file in any way.

I will do it again.

Looks like there is a fallback to DXVA2 (D3D9) for some reason because your video resolution is within the specs for hardware accceleration for this video card:

Code: Select all

dxva2 debug: Direct3d9 Device: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 10de 1200 a1

Code: Select all

Feature Set F Supports complete acceleration of HEVC Main (8-bit) & Main 10 (10-bit) and VP9 profile 0 (8-bit) with a resolution of up to 4096 × 2304 pixels.

On Windows 7 and above, the best video output module should be Direct3D 11:

Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = Direct3D11
Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = D3D11 Video Acceleration

Check also this:
https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:Video:Color_nVidia
You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

Make sure to click on the Save button after any changes, then you must close and exit VLC for the changes to take effect.

I looked at Tools -> Preferences -> VideoOutput = Direct3D11 that is there

For Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
I don't see an option for Hardware accelerated decoding = D3D11 Video Acceleration

I did look in Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Video Codecs and nothing in there other than 2 empty fields.

So you don't see this option in the drop down list ?

Image

In this case that means you have a problem with your video driver.

OK .. that was there .. I was going to the 'All' preferences, not the row of icons.
It was set to automatic, I have changed to Direct3D11 Video Acceleration
Saved.
Still the same

The video is HEVC, do I have to associate VLC with the H.265 codec ?

You can't do that and VLC is using its own internal built-in codecs anyway.

Reset the preferences and cache (the manual way) and try again:
https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:ResetPrefs

If it doesn't help then try another video output module:
http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.0 ... _output.3F

If it still doesn't help then check your computer latency:

1. - Reset - no change
2. tried several, those that worked showed no change
3. report attached ... but key comment I assume is "Your system appears to be suitable for handling real time audio and other tasks without dropouts'"

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report, the link to your messages log, the link to your sample file (which has expired, you need to reupload it) and the link to this thread:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

If possible, because of this:

I can't access to raise a ticket - will not accept pwd, and request to reset do not do anything.
To check I tried to register and it tells me my username is already registered - do you know of an admin email I can get support on access
