VLC 2.2.0 TYrouble With M4A Downloads from SMPlayer/SMTube

Postby rbrickle » 04 Mar 2015 05:21

Another user posted issues with Linux and VLC 2.2.0 and M4A files downloade with SMPlayer/SMTube. Similar issues playing such files on Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). Using 32 bit VLC 2.2.0 and 32 bit SMPLayer. Under VLC 2.2.0, M4A files cannot be fast-forward but seem to play if no attempt to skip forward is made. The time duration is also incorrect for M4A files. If M4A files converted to MP3 (using SuperC), MP3 files play OK.
I uninstalled VLC 2.2.0 after trying to downgrade to VLC 2.1.4. After complete Windows program uninstall process (VLC doesn't provide an Uninstall option), installation of VLC 2.1.4 worked and plays same M4A files without any problems.
I only used VLC 2.2.0 briefly - other than M4A issues, seems OK.
Thanks
Roy Brickley

I am experiencing the same exact problem with the video-only MP4 files created by en.savefrom.net, on a clean install of VLC 2.2.0. The files work perfectly with VLC 2.1.5 and the current SM Player 14.09.

The codec info on the MP4 files that won't play properly is "Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)"

(Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit)

Open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

Can you try 2.2.1 nightly build, please?

Pastebin won't accept my log and it's too big to post here, so I put it on Zippyshare: http://www2.zippyshare.com/v/B0K2dkne/file.html

Problem video: http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/IdrOZkj6/file.html

Using VLC Nightly 2.2.1

I am experiencing this bug too.
I have observed the following things regarding playing .m4a(AAC) files downloaded from Youtube using the FlashGot add-on in Firefox-:
- The song's length is shown to be double than the exact length of the song.
- The seek bar gets stuck once we try to jump to a specific position in the song.
- When the UI is closed, the song keeps playing in the background 2-3 seconds after the UI disappears. ( Another noteworthy observation was that the CPU usage of VLC.exe shoots to almost 25% from the usual 3% during these 2-3 seconds )
- When I encode the .mp4(AAC) file downloaded from Youtube into another .m4a(AAC) file using ffmpeg ( Quality setting = 250 ), this new file plays perfectly well by VLC.
- Other formats ( ogg vorbis and mp3 specifically ) seem to play fine.
- .mp4 video files downloaded from Youtube using the same FlashGot containing AAC as audio format plays OK.
- Earlier versions of VLC did not have this problem.

Relevant details about my computer's configuration -:
- Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit,Intel i3 3120M 2.5 Ghz, 4GB RAM
- VLC 2.2.0 x64 ( The 32-bit version also has this bug )
- Firefox 36.0.1
- Flashgot 1.5.6.10
- ffmpeg version 2.2.2 downloaded from here - http://lame.buanzo.org/#lamewindl

VLC message log and the audio file - https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing

I tried vlc-3.0.0-git-20150308-0402-win64.exe . Everything is fine except that the seek bar does not work.

I still get these problems with 2.2.1, even on a fresh Windows 8.1 Update 4 Professional installation (Windows Updates disabled, installed from en_windows_8.1_with_update_x64_dvd_6051485.iso).

Also, closing VLC by pressing the X button in the top right corner causes music to play for about 20 seconds until it finally stops - even though the window is long gone already. (You can still see and mute VLC in the volume mixer during that period)

Here's a VLC debug log of me listening to an M4A file downloaded using youtube-dl:

http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=NtxN2BZc

Image

I let the first 30 seconds of the file play, then i clicked the time slider once to skip to about ~1:31
After about 3 seconds, the Time slider jumped to 0:49 instead.

Yes, I can reproduce both issues, they occur with DASH M4A files.

Please, upload short sample files to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones).

Then, you should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with the links to your files and to this thread.

Use 3.0.0 for those, where it works.

For 2.2.1, you can force --demux avformat.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf your talking about VCL 3.0.0 .....
I read somewhere about VCL media player 3.0.0-git-20150402-0003 as a solution for my probem (as many people have with version 2.0.0 and up).
I use VLC ver. 2.1.5 Rincewind and it is starting slow (10-15 sec) on ... every file ext. as well as ... an "empty" program start.
BTW on startup at first nothing happens. After 5 seconds the Windows "circling buzy arrow" shows for 5 seconds. And then it finally starts.
Q 1 - on the VLC site version 3.0.0 is not shown. It is on e.g. software.com. Is it an spam software version ?
Q 2 - makes this sence or has it nothing to do with the problem? (on https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=124009)
After deleting VLC with Windows Program Change/delete for a second time, I checked under the Videolan file folder in Program Files and found that there were some files left-over that Windows did not get rid of. So I deleted those accessory files. I then re-installed the program and it works like a champ. Now I just need to re-add the extension and I will be good to go.

Keep on the good work you guys do, WieboJW from Holland.
My System = Win 7 - Intel i5 - 8 Gb ROM - 500 gB HDD

It works properly in vlc-3.0.0-git-20150420-0003 but only if I force --demux avformat.
