vlc-1.1.11-win32 doesn't work

Postby sean_incali » 22 Oct 2011 01:33

I upgraded from vlc 0.8.6.h, because some of the mp4 files do not play in older version that I had installed.

Now that I'm running vlc-1.1.11-win32, there are no videos at all. Audios work fine. Just no videos. I'm on windows vistas home version, 64 bit.

Lastly, The reason I've been using the 0.8.6.h for so long is because that version allows me to separate the direct 3D output window by itself which can be viewed in full screen but I have access to the controls and playlist by switching the active windows. Is there a way to do that in the new versions? I asked this once before, but only answer I got was that VLC always had that functionality, but not on how to get that older inteface back. (in my opinion that old interface with video and audio equalizer with separate playlist and output windows is he best thing about VLC player.)

Much obliged for any info.

Sean

What do you mean by "there are no videos at all"?

How did you try to play a video? (Double-click on file, Drag & Drop, Ctrl+O ?)

What format is the file (e.g. .avi .mp4 ...)?
What do you see (e.g. black window?)?

Ctrl+P -> Video - what are the settings for Output, ...(Overlay), Use hardware ... ?

You can go to/from Full Screen by simply hit F on the keyboard (and there are Full Screen controls when you move the mouse)

I'm not sure what do you mean by separated windows, maybe check the menu View -> Docked Playlist

Or you mean this setting?:

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't matter which method I use to play the file. There is no video playing in the video window. Audio plays, but in the video window, there is just blank default screen showing the cone. I'm using default setting for output.

I tried that, but the video doesn't play so I have no idea what that's supposed to do. What I mean by separate window is like shown below. The controls window is on top left, play list on the bottom, and the output window is on the right. I'm so used to it, it's really difficult to get used to other interfaces...

I don't get blank black screen. I get the default cone screen. Does this method also solve that? I ask because I already reinstalled 0.8.6.h version. If that method fixes it, then I'll give it another go.

I think to just experiment with the newer version you can get the 7-Zip (.7z) package:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

... extract it to different directory (I will suggest to NOT put it in \Program Files\ for Vista/7)
and start vlc.exe (then use Drag & Drop or Ctrl+O)

Experiment with: Ctrl+P -> Video - change one setting for "...(Overlay)", "Output" or "Use hardware ..."
[Save], Exit VLC and start again vlc.exe

Try to play again the video file (how many different video files did you try?)

Ctrl+I - look at "Codec Details" - does it show any "Stream" that is "Type: Video"?

Also to get more (Debug) info
Stop video
Ctrl+M
Set "Verbosity Level" to 2 (you can keep this "Messages" window open)

Start/Play video
Look for error/warning Messages

When I tried this first time, vlc started up OK. So I ticked off the 'embedde video.' When I tried to restart the vlc player, it will start then close immediately. I made a screen capture movie using camstudio.

Not sure what else to do here.

Ok. So I'm back to my original install (0.8.6.h) trying to figure out why some mp4 files don't play while others do.

Here's what happened with one that doesn't play.

1. main warning: late picture skipped (188908167)
This went on forever. So I unticked 'skip late frame' from preferences. Then this happened.

2. ffmpeg warning: abs_diff_pic_num overflow
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg warning: decode_slice_header error
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg warning: illegal short term buffer state detected
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg debug: concealing 2720 DC, 2720 AC, 2720 MV errors
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg warning: abs_diff_pic_num overflow
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg warning: decode_slice_header error
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg warning: illegal short term buffer state detected
(h264@0558F060)
ffmpeg debug: concealing 2720 DC, 2720 AC, 2720 MV errors
(h264@0558F060)

That repeated for ever.

3.under stream and media info, I found that the file is...
stream 0
codec avc1

stream 1
codec mp4a

stream 2
codec subt

I'm guessing the avc1 codec is what is causing problems. I hear the audio fine in this file.

You can get the file here to test it out.

I think you can try to "Play" with the Player ;)

Since the problem with MP4 appears to be in plugins - Try to mix the two VLC versions.

I see 2 ways to do that:

1) Copy vlc.exe 0.8.6.h to the folder vlc-1.1.11
(vlc.exe will be older, all the other files (e.g. DLLs) will be newer)

2) Rename the folder "plugins" in your current 0.8.6.h installation (to e.g. "---plugins---0.8.6.h")
and then copy the folder "plugins" from the folder vlc-1.1.11
(so you continue to use VLC 0.8.6.h but with newer plugins)

Plugin change won't work for most plugins, since APIs and ABIs have changed.
