I got the same problem when vlc 0.8.0 was released. Vlc 0.7.2 plays high definition files (.ts, 1080i) on my 2x2GHz with around 60% processor usage with interlace blend. Download vlc 0.7.2 instead of 0.8.1.
0.7.2 plays dts just fine on your normal speakers (but does not passthrough the datastream).
