How to connect to a IPTV multicast stream with VLC?

Postby paalkr » 09 Jan 2011 23:16

Hi all!

I'm trying to connect to some multicast IPTV stream with VLC. The attached screen dump shows some of the streams sniffed with wireshark, from a computer connected directly to my router. I have tried entering rtp://@233.171.129.74:5500 in VLC, but the only thing I get is the following message in the debug console.
rtp demux error: RTP flow stopped.

Any help please?

Regards,
PK

Does rtp://233.171.129.74:5500 work any better?

Unfortunately, no, the same error message. Does the RTP flow stopped message actually mean that VLC actually recognized an Multicast stream, but for some reason the stream stops immediately? Can I provide some more logs or anything to help solving the issue?

I'm also thinking about my network topology, and if I have to change any settings in my router or other network settings. I'm no Ethernet expert, and the IP range of 233.x.x.x is sort of a mystery to me. My SetTopBox is connected directly to the same router (the one provided by my ISP) as the computer running VLC. In the connected client list on the router the SetTopBox is assigned with the local IP address 10.0.0.9 (and answers on ping), and all other connected equipment and computer get IP addresses in the same 10.0.0.x range. How is VLC going to be able to connect to anything in the 233.x.x.x IP range with this setup? Is something magically happening in my router? After all I was able to fetch the Multicast streams with WireShark, so somehow the streams are picked up by my computer, and not only the SetTopBox.

Thanks for any help!

PK

Hi!

VLC defenately pics up the stream, but it is scrambled (with Conax CAstream). I have a legal key card from my provider, but I guess that hardware CAMs for IPTV could be problematic, or will CAM modules and readers for DVB-C or DVB-T work? Anyway, some of the streams should be Free To Air, so I guess that I'll just have to find those streams. I thought that VLC would show some scrambled pictures if the stream was scrambled, but that is obviously not the case.

That would be case for analog TV broadcasts, but with digital if decryption cannot be done, you don't get any video at all.

The radio channels is unencrypted and those play fine if I enter e.g. rtp://239.192.225.129:5500, so "stuff" works. Next challenge: find a CAM solution that works with retail key-cards and IPTV :?

Thanks for the help so far.
