When i play my DVD's without dvd menus
Some DVD's are using a protection scheme which is forcing you to enable the menus.

When I play with menus, and I select an option such as play all, the dvd stops playing with the error above: read failed for -1/4 blocks at 0x01

the video disappears and i'm left with the vlc player in stopped mode.

VLC cannot play all DVD Video discs because they contain additional copy protection methods that VLC doesn't support. One option is to rip those movies to hard drive with tools like AnyDVD or DVDfab decrypter.
