As far as I can see VLC cannot play *.swf files.
Do I have to enable it somewhere ?
or do I need a plugin for this?

VLC cannot play SWF files. And there isn't a plugin for that. VLC can play .flv files.

With all due respect, not correct!VLC cannot play SWF files. And there isn't a plugin for that. VLC can play .flv files.
VLC Windows up to 1.17 played SWF "Flash" files -- and FLV -- VERY well in Win XP, Vista and Win 7 32 and 64bit OS.
If it did not, then the estimated 1,100 SWF files that we played for many months with VLC WIn 1.17 in Win XP SP2/SP3 and in WIn 7 32bit and 64bit must have been smoke-and-mirrors.
VLC Windows 1.18 is broken, and does not play SWF files at all, which is NOT correct or proper.Joe

AFAIK VLC has never been able to play real SWF files but only FLV ones.
So please upload a short sample of a SWF file that you think VLC is (was) able to play on some file sharing site, you may want to use Multiupload.com as it will upload the file on several other hosts for you, and then post the link to the file here.
