VLC Won't Play Audio in 5.1

Postby dlar76 » 29 Aug 2010 06:28

Hello,

I have been using vlc for years now and very much enjoy it. My problem with it is that it wont play in 5.1. Ive never been able to get 5.1 out of it(HDMI output on my laptop) Ive search the web extensivly and have trouble shot the problem on my own. Vlc wont play 5.1 for any type of file including actual dvds that i put into my laptop, knowing of course that they are 5.1 audio. Even when i change "audio device" to "5.1", i get the same result. when i try the same files and dvds with media player or media center they automatically pick up the 5.1 audio and play it properly.

i would just switch to the player that work properly but of course they dont play MKV files.

i dont know what to do or how to troubleshoot or repair the problem any further. I am pretty much positive that it is an issue with vlc and not my sound card because the files play fine with media player.

any help would be appreciated

thanks

windows 7 64bit
realtek high definition audio
HDMI output
Reciever that is dd/dts

If you select SPDIF option, does it work?

Yes that worked. Thank you very much. Is there any way to have it set there all the time so I dot have to pick it. If not no big deal. I am just happy that it worked.

Thanks again

Tools -> Preferences (Show Settings: All) Audio and then tick Use S/PDIF when available. Press Save and restart VLC.

I seem to have the same problem and I have followed these, and similar methods for fixes, but it still doesn't seem to work.
The thing is that it shows in the menu that I have 5.1 selected where before it didnt.

So something seems to be trying to work, but it sure a heck is not what I am hearing. Until I select the 5.1 option AGAIN, I wont hear 5.1, and I did that anyway when it showed stereo as the default.
Some have said that something has to be done with my sound card/driver to make it work correctly, but mine doesn't seem to want to let me do that, doesn't have the options, or I am looking in the wrong place.
I just cant figure this thing out.

Try VLC 2.1.0

If you are not using Vlc 2.1.0 but older versions then
Go to Preferences and audio
Select Win32 output from dropdown menu
Restart vlc and now you will get default 5.1 audio in available videos
Good Luck
