"File reading failed:" error on most videos

Postby djvivi » 15 Jan 2010 11:42

Why is it that VLC for a few versions now when I double click most AVI files it just opens an Error Window saying;

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "C\~~file name
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'C:--file name--

I get one set of error message per word in the file name.

And yet if i drag the file to an open VLC manualy it plays?#

At the moment I double click avi file, it opens the VLC player and Error window, I then close the Error window and drag the avi file to VLC Player and it works.

Peace

Andy

Delete preferences and cache.

Well thanks for the suggestion, I had tried with a few versions as the option to clear preferences and cache is available as an option during install and uninstall, however I tried again with the latest version and also cleaned all reg enteries and deleted files in the program files and document folders.

The problem persists, but now I know what causes it to happen at least. It is when I move a file from its original loctation, if i download and double click an AVI and play it from the downloaded position its fine, but if I move the file to a another folder for neatness the errors occure.
It does seem I can move some AVI's and not others though, so moving files is not the only issue I suspect

I don't see why that should give VLC any problems, it certainly doesn't effect the other players I try to open the moved files.

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) and then try to open problematic file, it should give more messages.

I've done as you suggested, no messages, not even in verbose 1, or 0.

This is what happens if i double click an avi, in this case called "The Daily Show 2010-01-11.avi" which is located at "C:\Downloads\Daily Show & Colbert Report"
it would of originaly been downloaded to "C:\Downloads\" and this particular avi worked fine from that location.

An error window opens and this is all the text;

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "C:\Downloads\Daily".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'C:\Downloads\Daily'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "Show".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'Show'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "&".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL '&'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "Colbert".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'Colbert'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "Report\The".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'Report\The'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "Daily".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'Daily'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "Show".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'Show'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "2010-01-11.avi".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL '2010-01-11.avi'. Check the log for details.

Now theres nothing in the Message window at all.

Note, that if i drag the avi to an allready open VLC player. or to the VLC icon on the Desktop it will work fine with no errors.

Your file associations are messed up. They are missing "" around %1.

The file association was set to VLC but wrongly, pressing "restore" in the "file types" window fixed the issues.

Thanks very much for your help.
