What is "Discs Playback"?

when installing the windows version of vlc, i saw a checkbox next to a feature named "Discs Playback". the description for this is "DVD and CD playback registration". what is this exactly?

It means that VLC registers itself in windows as an "able to play cd and dvd discs" program. Not sure if this means it becomes the default program for the task.

You also get Shell Extension options, so you can right click your DVD drive and select Play with VLC option.
