Choppy DVD playback (Win'n'Linux) Harddisk and original DVDs

Postby posde » 25 May 2006 13:56

Hi,

first post, please be gentle :)

I have a problem playing DVDs. Every now and than a small wait happens, no sound, no picture change, than, 2 seconds later everything is fine again.

This happens on multiple different DVDs. It happens on Windows and Linux on different PCs. It happens playing from original DVDs and from backups played of the harddisk.

It can be verified on the STAR_WARS_EPISODE_III (german version). Titel 1 Chapter 3, after the Sun starts to come up a small pause of about 1 second happens. Also, within the movie, there are sometimes pauses of 10 or more seconds. It seems as if the frames are skipped, because the story pics up 10 seconds later, just no picture nor sound within those 10 seconds.

Anyone else has experienced this? Even saying, that you don't have a problem like this would help.

I already tried the Mailing List, without any answer. Maybe I have more luck here.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have some more information.

I played the DVD with vout=dummy and the same problem occurs.

However, I also upped the verbose message to 2 and during the glitch these are the messages appearing:

Code: Select all

[00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: DVDNAV_NOP [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: DVDNAV_CELL_CHANGE [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - cellN=6 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - pgN=3 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - cell_length=6670800 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - pg_length=34628400 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - pgc_length=725641200 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - cell_start=17456400 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - pg_start=16938000 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: DVDNAV_SPU_CLUT_CHANGE [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: DVDNAV_SPU_STREAM_CHANGE [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - physical_wide=128 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - physical_letterbox=129 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - physical_pan_scan=128 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: buttonUpdate not done b=1 t=1 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: DVDNAV_AUDIO_STREAM_CHANGE [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: - physical=0 [00000284] dvdnav demuxer debug: buttonUpdate not done b=1 t=1
Hopefully, this is helpful to people in the known. The above was taken from an Ubuntu system with VLC 0.8.5. The symptom however occurs on all *nix and Windows systems I tested.

If you need any more information, please tell me so.

Thanks.

probably the spin up/down of your DVD drive. Some systems don't handle that too nicely. (and VLC doesn't wait for input for more then 300ms. then it goes on dumping the old data).
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Thanks for the reply.

The problem happens whether the movie is played of the DVD-drive or the harddisk. The place where the error occurs is always the same, no matter which of the systems I try this on. Do you have an idea, what else I might check?

TIA
