Unidentified codec: VLC could not identify the audio or video codec

Postby llagos » 15 Aug 2021 23:52

Hi All,

I got a mkv file with 2 audios and 1 sub. When I switch audios, no problem. But, when I switch from "no subs" to the only subtitle, this error is shown:

Unidentified codec: VLC could not identify the audio or video codec

And of course, it can't play the subtitle... No subtitle... I ran Mediainfo on this file, and subtitle says:

Code: Select all

Text ID : 4 Format : DVB Subtitle Muxing mode : zlib Codec ID : S_DVBSUB Codec ID/Info : Picture based subtitle format used on DVBs Duration : 1 h 15 min Bit rate : 19.3 kb/s Count of elements : 2887 Stream size : 10.5 MiB (0%) Language : Spanish Default : No Forced : No
Any idea what could be wrong?

Version is 3.0.16 (latest) 64bit.

Thanks!

Any idea what could be wrong?

Maybe this:

Code: Select all

Text Muxing mode : zlib
Maybe.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
https://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

Thanks for the help @Lotesdelere...

Enabled messages and from looking at them, several errors, but the first one, upon opening the file is:

mkv error: unknown codec id=`S_DVBSUB'

I switched subs on and off a couple times, and also the audio.

Complete log is on https://pastebin.com/cwgnG8V5

Initial 200MB are here https://we.tl/t-zJw0K1gMWQ

Let me know if the shares are OK. 1st time user of both pastebin & wetransfer.

thanks again!

Code: Select all

main debug: attachment of directory-extractor failed for file:///L:/pelis/24X36%20A%20Movie%20About%20Movie%20Posters%20(2016)%20[SATRip%201080i%20AC3(ES)%20E-AC3(EN)%20Subs(ES)].mkv

But it's playing fine with other players including FFplay.

You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your above report, the link to your log, the link to your sample file and the link to this thread:

The linked bug report says it was fixed one month ago for VLC 4.0.

VLC 3.0.9 is a year and a half old so...
