Video gets shown in a seperate window

Postby WorstAppEver » 01 Aug 2021 15:06

Hi, since the latest Update to VLC 3.0.16 (under Fedora) the video gets shown in a seperate Window permanently. This was not before. I tried everything to avoid this but nothing works. I also restored the settings and restarted VLC dozens of times after changing settings. And yes for sure I have enabled "Tools -> Settings -> Embed video to interface" or however this setting will be called in the english UI. Please fix this annoying bug. And that's not the first time the settings dialog became broken. It's obvious the responsible developer has not enough experience. Please remove this guy from this project. Maybe he can help the graphics team instead. There he will not make so much trouble. Thanks.

And by the way. Jean-Baptiste Kempf gave an Interview that the germans would destroy VLC:

https://www.golem.de/news/open-source-m ... 54415.html

I have highly to disagree. You destroy yourself on your own...

Ah, and I almost forgot. Not only the problem above. The Video is also not scaled anymore to the window size. Instead it's getting cutted off. Although I have disabled "Interface an Videogröße anpassen" / "Adjust interface to video size" (or however the setting is called in the english UI). So there are two bugs to be exact.

As far as I have heard, that's problem in Fedora that goes away with some update. I can't, and never could, reproduce the issue on Debian.

And the size bug is probably a side effect of the first bug.

I have the same issue in Fedora 34 with latest VLC 3.0.16. Downgrading to 3.0.12 fixed the separate window issue (command: "sudo dnf downgrade vlc").

I still have an issue with 2160p videos, that they are always shown as a small letterbox in the middle of the screen (both in window mode and full screen). I can solve it by toggling with "c" until until they fill the screen (at 2.35:1). I do have an ultra-widescreen 34" display (1440p). This issue has persisted for a long time.

Hi Remi, thanks for your reply. I was a Debian user for a decade now and had similar problems over and over again. But now changed to Fedora because the old dated debian couldn't support my new hardware anymore (even with Debian 11 RC ...). Maybe my 48" monitor plays a role in this behaviour too and some window calculations are messed up. But if I read the reported errors here in the forum it is obvious the Settings-Dialog-Team seems not to understand their own code anymore. There are so many bugs related to the settings. Please find a solution for this mess. After I opened this tread I had some testing again and I could see that the behaviour changed with every VLC restart. As if the settings would toggle around with every start. One time it showed the video integrated. The next time with a separate window again. Then after some changes it worked for a few starts as expected showing me the extern window again after a while. Now the behaviour changed again. Now I have always a extern window and the video isn't scaled anymore. So I have hughe black space around it. A catastrophe. And the bug for sure will not be fixed with an update as I have the latest version .16 already. So please investigate this. But for me it's time to change the player now. It's not usable anymore. Goodbye.

This not a problem wit the embedded video setting. We know this for certain based on the user logs (well, assuming that users do not post faked logs). Furthermore, the specific VLC 3.0.13 changeset that exposes the bug is in code entirely specific to embedded video mode. In fact, I surmise that the likely consequent scaling issue would not occur with the "normal" non-embedded video.

It's just that, for some unknown reasons, the intendedly embedded video window gets created without parent.

I cannot investigate this any further with the data that I (do not) have and with no means to reproduce the problem. All I have are unverifiable hypothesises:
  • a distro-specific mistake in VLC build/packaging rules breaking the reparenting code,
  • a latent race bug in a Qt GUI back-end plug-in that is uncovered by the 3.0.13 work-around for the infamous MesaGL lock-up bug.

What WM is used here? Does the problem reproduce with Kwin or XFCE?

the video gets shown in a separate window
[...]
I have enabled "Tools -> Settings -> Embed video to interface"
Same problem here.
I run Pop!_OS 21.04 on an ASUS ZenBook UX310U.

But for me, repeatedly closing VLC and reopening it (by double clicking the target video file in the FileManager) eventually achieves the expected behaviour, with video feed and UI frame both within a single window. Repeating the action even more eventually makes the bug return. So overall it's a discontinuous effect. Although most of the time it's there :(

Is there anything I can do to offer better/more info and help solve this bug?

As hinted above, try with other window managers than whichever you're using.

Based on the data available at this time, the bug exposed by VLC 3.0.13 lies in the window manager. Work-around is to use a different window manager.

Why was my post from yesterday deleted and why do you regret to fix this bug?

You are not making sense. The bug was independently confirmed not to be a VLC bug. There was always a work-around, and now there are two more of them (since it cannot be "fixed" properly speaking).

As you know, you were trolling, and we do not tolerate trolling here.
