VLC 3.0 -- HDMI Audio Passthrough

Hi,

I just can't seem to get HDMI Audio Passthrough working with VLC 3.0 on Gentoo Linux.

On the very same box, it works flawlessly with the latest Kodi, but VLC 3.0 invariably downsamples DTS, Dolby, TrueHD, and DTS-HD to stereo (using the very same audio device).

Any ideas / insights / config files / ... would be very welcome.

Depending on the output module, you either need to configure PulseAudio or VLC for pass-through.

Bonjour Rémi,

I'm not using PulseAudio (Kodi works fine without it), so I'd rather configure VLC for pass-through. Problem is, I have no idea how. It *always* downsamples to stereo. I've gone through all the preference settings, and I can't figure it out.

Any thoughts?

Then you need to enable S/PDIF passthrough in audio preferences, and possibly select the correct output device in ALSA preferences.

I created a separate setup in ALSA's asound.conf, and when I select that one, and enable the S/PDIF passthrough, it works. But *only* for DTS and Dolby Digital. *Not* for DTS-HD or TrueHD.

Starting up VLC in verbose mode, I also seem to get a "main decoder error: failed to create audio output".

The above might seem to imply there's something wrong with my system, but again, Kodi and MPD work just fine.

Figured I'd give a little update. So far, I can't seem to make VLC properly pass-through DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. DTS-HD gets downmixed to DTS (or it uses the Core signal embedded in DTS), and TrueHD gets downmixed to stereo.

I would *really* like to hear from anyone who has figured this one out. Else, I'd be inclined to file a bug report.

TrueHD and DTS-HD support with ALSA is missing so far. I have a patch, but no hardware to test it.

Reading through the changelog, I actually figured out as well that ALSA was ominously missing. ;)

Good news about the patch. I have the hardware. How can we make that work together?

I'm on Gentoo Linux, so I'm basically compiling everything. I have no idea however how that git stuff works.

Let's take this particular discussion (= how to compile stuff from git) out of the forum, and switch to direct messages? In the meantime, I'll emerge git.

I've compiled VLC 4.0 from your git repository, tested it with a TrueHD and a DTS-HD mkv, and the result is exactly the same as with VLC 3.0 (either downmixed to stereo, or plain DTS). And I did select the HDMI passthrough option in the Audio -- Output Modules section.

The log looks like pass-through is disabled in configuration.

It's not. I know that the log doesn't explicitly say that it is, or isn't, but you'll have to take my word for it that pass-through was set to HDMI. And again, the behaviour and log for v4.0 are exactly the same as for v3.0.

I've browsed through the source of Kodi, and they check the ELDs connected to the HDMI port. It turned a bit hazy after that, but my guess is they probe the DAC attached to the HDMI port instead of the internal soundcard (that's why Kodi actually shows the name of my surround processor in Kodi as the pass-through device). When they play an MKV, the surround processor basically says "I support DTS-HD and TrueHD, so bring it on unprocessed", and all goes well. I'm guessing that VLC talks to the internal sound card, which says "I can't do DTS-HD or TrueHD, so please downmix before giving it to me". Seems logical, but code-wise this is beyond me.

I've just tried to help. I'm considering this topic closed.

That's not the problem here. The log says that ALSA is configured to not event check for pass-through support at all.

I'm not trying to autodetect and negotiate pass-through, I'm trying to make it work at all.
