Green Screen: HEVC 12bit intel i915 archlinux

Postby johnea » 25 Apr 2016 01:50

Hello,

I'm able to play most x265 format videos, except it seems, the 12bit color depth.

These HEVC "Tears of Steel" and jellyfish 10bit demo samples play correctly:
http://trailers.divx.com/hevc/TearsOfSt ... 5_HM11.mkv
http://jell.yfish.us/media/jellyfish-3- ... -10bit.mkv

Sorry, I couldn't find any online 12bit sample to test (outside of bittorrent).

The HEVC 12bit media does play correctly with the smplayer on the same computer, however with vlc I get audio and a mostly green screen with shifting artifacts.

I know there have been previous issues with the arch build, if someone can confirm that this is an arch build problem I will try to address it through the arch forums.

Thank you very much for your help...

johnea

Does HEVC 12bit video work for you?

Postby johnea » 27 Apr 2016 23:21

Maybe I can ask the question a better way:

Can VLC 2.2.2 properly render HEVC2 (x265) 12bit video?

If anyone can confirm that vlc 2.2.2 is properly rendering this format, then it must be a build issue.

Thanks again...

In principles, yes. In practice, the performance is very unlikely to be good enough.

Thank you Remi.

So maybe my problem is that the machine just doesn't have the performance needed to render this format.

Maybe I'll just setup a script to transcode this stuff into something more simple...

VLC plays 8bit or 10bit HEVC (4:2:0 or 4:4:4) ok. VLC can't play 12bit HEVC 4:2:0 or 12bit HEVC 4:4:4 at the moment - you get a green screen.
Other players can play 12bit HEVC 4:2:0 but as far as I know nothing can play 12bit HEVC 4:4:4 at the moment.

Here's some test files including a readme.txt
http://bit.ly/1NxTIUy

VLC 2.2.4 fails on 12bit HEVC files (both 4:2:0 and 4:4:4).
mplayer (and derivative players like smplayer, mpv and umplayer) and kodi play all the files.
MPC-HC + LAV fails with the 12bit HEVC 4:4:4 file but plays everything else ok.
PowerDVD15 only plays 8bit and 10bit 4:2:0 - it doesn't like 4:4:4 or 12bit. I haven't tested PowerDVD16.
I didn't test 4:2:2 mode. In the past 10bit x264 4:2:2 mode created the largest filesize compared to 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 so it's not worth the bother.

It's the same problem as this one:

All of them are fixed in 3.0.0. If you share a 4:2:2 12 bits, I will map it too.

4:2:2 files added and updated readme2.txt
http://bit.ly/1NxTIUy

VLC 2.2.4 can't play 12bit HEVC 4:2:2 - smplayer can't play 12bit HEVC 4:2:2 either but can play everything else.
10bit HEVC 4:2:2 plays ok with both players.
MPC-HC+LAV and Kodi play both 10bit and 12bit HEVC 4:2:2 files ok.

mpv has just had an update - it now plays 12bit HEVC 4:2:2 ok.
Not that anyone would use that mode.

Tried vlc 3.0.0 nightly: sound works, no video (vlc icon on black). https://nightlies.videolan.org/build/wi ... 1216-0441/
VLC 2.2.4 was slightly better, had sound, subtitles when paused (vanishes when playing), constant green.
MPC-hc plays the files.

Samples: search any torrents HEVC2, or (1280x720 HEVC2 AAC).
Most files I think said hevc2 H.265, 4:2:0 in mpc.
