Is there any doc about the VLC architecture?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Is there any doc about the VLC architecture?

Postby simonmychen » 18 Oct 2005 05:01

VLC is a powerful player for media playback and streaming. Now, I wanna develop a client in embedded system to support microsoft media server. I have some questions when I browser
1. Is there any doc that can help me to understand VLC architecture more? and where can I find them?
2. How to porting this stack to another platform? I just wanna port the protocol stack, excluding GUI and codec.
3. MMS is a proprietary protocol from microsoft. If I develop an embedded device that can get play the media stream from microsoft media server, do I need to get a license from microsoft? ( We will get the wma/wmv codec from licensed third party)
4. What's the DRM mechanism of mms and does vlc support it?
5. Microsoft media server supports RTSP protocol too. But the SDP format is different from Real or quicktime server. Does vlc support the special SDP format? Is there any doc to describe this?

Thanks!
Simon

Why don't try to create Theora content that is free and open source?

Theora also supports streaming.

1: what is there is on http://developers.videolan.org/vlc
2: VLC is already ported to more platforms then any other media player
3: Most probably
4: VLC does not support WMV DRM (MMS has no DRM, only WMV)
5: VLC supports parts of it, but not yet 100% (see trac.videolan.org/vlc)
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Thanks to your kindly reply. I have gotten the doc.
About the question 4, the DRM mechanism is for wmv. Does MMS need to carry some information for the DRM?
