VLC & Cineform

Postby matt_williams80 » 27 Aug 2015 19:35

I'm just wondering why the popular Cineform codec won't play in VLC?

In the past they wouldn't play because VLC only supports open source formats, but now that the Cineform codec is SMPTE standardised there shouldn't be an issue with Cineform and VLC (this was confirmed to us today by a Cineform representative).

It's a shame as I use VLC for everything, except Cineform files as they won't play. It would be great if VLC were able to add support.

CINEFORM FOR VLC _ Kolor Plugin

Informative reply
-------------------

Some interrogations about Gopro Cineform Codec into the Forums (include mine) and how to read it with VLC _ and lacks of replies on the net.
*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Behind Avid DNxHD / DNxHR and Apple Prores video editing and post prod Intermediate Codecs, Adobe have chosen to fill their gap whith the under known Gopro Cineform Codec wrapped as .Mov files. Seemingly an excellent choice..
Actually VLC is unable to read natively this Codec.
But an official plugin exists that we can install even on a portable version of VLC that allow these .mov files to be read .

The GoPro CineForm intermediate codec is a video encoding format designed for editing and post-production that allows for multiple encodes of the same material with minimal loss in quality.
Adobe After Effects CC, Adobe Premiere Pro CC, and Adobe Media Encoder CC can natively decode and encode QuickTime files using the GoPro CineForm codec on both Mac OS X and Windows systems. This means you can work efficiently with GoPro footage and translate high-resolution footage to an easily managed, cross-platform, high-quality codec.

In the latest version of After Effects CC and Adobe Media Encoder CC, the GoPro CineForm codec can be used to natively decode and encode QuickTime files (.mov). Hence you do not need to install additional codecs to create and use QuickTime files.

install for VLC portable version (personnal experiment)
****************************************************

-Choose the correct plugin version: _vlc32 or _vlc64 depending on your VLC version installed, NOT your OS architecture!

Note:
I have been unable to find what version of 32 or 64 bits my portable paf installer had installed. and nowhere to find this info inside VLC ....!!! I have chosen the 64bits one as my system runs Win7 x64 ->it was the right choice.

- probably a good idea is to make a new restauration point before install.

- launch the cineform plugin installer. when you are prompt to locate the install folder, go to:
My VLC portable folder\App\vlc.

and that's it. VLC can now read perfectly Cineform/Quicktime video files.

Cheers,
Suli Ed
