It does work. Look at this extension: https://github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-click-plugin . Versions lower than 2.1.0 are not supported. So take care.

And there are extensions to do it.
It's not good to continue to do like if have a solution to this problem, because this solution do not work!

- http://addons.videolan.org/content/show ... ent=158285
"ANNOUNCEMENT: starting from VLC version 2.1 this extension stopped working, because VLC developers have removed few important callback from lua API, which this extension was relying on"

I tried on my own version (v2.2.1) and on the last version (v2.2.4) ...

IT DON'T WORK!
Then what else?
(boring)

- Thanks -
[Solved]
I just tried:
on VLC version 2.2.4 and it worked great for me. He even fixed the double click issue. Double click toggles full-screen and does not pause, but single click does pause. You can even specify which mouse button pauses.

Directions:
make sure you look up your version in Help > About
Mine is version 2.2.4 (which is the most current version on 19 October 2016) so in the github I used his (vlc-2.2.x+) code, link:
- https://github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-cli ... c-2.2.x%2B

For windows I downloaded his .zip file under the install instructions
the .zip file only contains 1 file (libpause_click_plugin.dll)
after extracting the .zip folder I placed the .dll file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\video_filter\" folder per his instructions
I activated and configured it inside the vlc program. I will copy his instructions here

Usage
1. Restart VLC to load the newly added plugin
2. Go into advanced preferences: Tools -> Preferences -> Show settings -> All
3. Enable/Disable the plugin with a checkbox: (in advanced preferences) Video -> Filters -> Pause/Play video on mouse click
4. Enable/Disable the plugin with a checkbox: (in advanced preferences) Interface -> Control Interfaces -> Pause/Play video on mouse click
5. Change mouse button to the one you want: (in advanced preferences) Video -> Filters -> Pause click -> Mouse Button
6. Restart VLC for settings to take place
7. Play a video
8. Click on video picture to pause/play the video

Appears to be broken in latest nightly build. Plugin doesn't show up after putting in plugins/video_filter & restarting.

Latest Nightly: 3.0.0-Git Vetinari - Dec 26 2016 04:31:45

Very frustrating the lack of this feature.
This software is awesome but in my humble opinion (just for me, and just for this reason) it's unfinished.
I'll check again in the future.
Happy new year everybody!

Couldn't get this to work on windows 10. I have 32 bit VLC version 2.2.4 and downloaded and tried the 2.2.x version provided in the link above. Nothing shows up in the video filter list.

I'm another guy that votes for a native start/pause function by clicking into the video. Just add an option in the preferences to turn it on/off in case we watch a DVD.

A VERY simple solution to this "problem" is to check to see if it is in fact running/playing a DVD video or on a menu, if not then PAUSE THE VIDEO - who watches DVD's anymore anyway??? it's mp4, avi, mov, mkv, flv etc etc, to watch a DVD on a 8k screen is a joke and the poorest excuse to not allowing a feature to be """OPTIONAL"""!!!! for it's users I have ever seen. Just add it to the menu and while your at it make Alt + Enter to go full screen (like is the standard with every Media player on almost all OS's, except VLC").

The reason we love VLC is because it has inbuilt support without needing extra Codec packs. why ignore requests to improve things for your user base? Why even bother sharing anything public if your not going to listen to pages of the same request from multiple users? May as well just shut the forum if it can't be used for it's intended purpose.

On a good note, at least your double click goes full screen and back to window mode as expected :D

EDIT: Please, reader, if you have the same problem and you haven't written anything in this thread: Please do so! Make a comment so the real importance of this "feature" emerges! (Don't be shy or lazy. I just registered too. That takes maybe two minutes and it's for a good cause! :) )
I would not have done this except for this persons request. I am often frustrated at using this program because it is missing this feature. Besides not being intuitive, it takes time to precisely click the tiny play/pause button during which I am missing parts of the movie. THen i either have to mess around with going back 10 seconds to see what I missed or just be annoyed and continue the movie. It is enough to make me hate watching DVD's on my computer/big screen.

The only reason i use MPC over vlc is exactly this feature. Please add an option or settings so we can enable this.

Love VLC, really hate that it's missing this feature. I can't unprogram by brain; I keep clicking and wondering why my video didn't pause.

Although I have gotten the addon to work on 2.2.5.1, I just wanted to raise my hand and say "me too" in saying that this really should be built in. Although it seems you could check whether or not a DVD is playing to determine the click's behavior, if that can't work for some reason, just make it an option people can turn on or off and decide for themselves which (DVD or click pause) is more important to them. I think you would find a significant majority preferring the click to pause option.

Thanks for your consideration.

Just a note that this works great in 2.2.6 Umbrella, the most recent version at the time of this post. I am on Windows 8, and 10 (Anniversary Update).

I believe some people are not taking the time to read the original posted link to Git - it did take some time to find the Usage section and then follow the steps there.

richmelchr's instructions appear to be exactly what you need so no need to re-post here, but I used the step-by-step on the current git site: https://github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-cli ... /vlc-2.2.x+ and had success. I am running the 32-bit version. Have not tried 64-bit yet, but will post back only if there are issues.

Just have confidence, slow down, and read thoroughly. It does work fine.

A huge "Thank You" to the developers of this plug-in.

It is ridiculous !
It's a a car with a square steering wheel or a square spoon. People are used to click a video to pause it. Thanks to youtube.
I'm not a programmer but it cannot be impossible.
Why would it not be possible to have the video catching a click as a background layer and have the ... how do you call it 'control bar panel' as a top layer ?
Something like :
check if the click is on a control bar button , yes : execute button function
no : goto check2
check2 : check if click is on video area, yes : change pause state
no : nevermind

I've been using vlc since it began as a french student project, and as an inhabitant from the country north of France, like it very much, but this one annoying detail has me almost looking for another mediaplayer...
Sometimes you don't have to add stuff anymore. Once it plays every video, stop changing it. Just add a possibility for addons so people can customize it like they want.
Spend your time making addons and leave the functioning product like it is. But unfortunately it must be impossible for humans to stop evolving stuff...

This doesn't mean i'm not grateful for your guys making vlc : thank you very much ! It's just this tiny little... ;)
How do you make DVD menus and interactive filter works if you use click to pause.

Hi Jean-Baptiste - first, VLC is a great program - thanks for all of your & your team's work to provide a fantastic & very capable media player - as others in this thread have stated, a significant blemish to the player is the ability to click the screen to pause playback - from your posts on this topic, you mention that there is a plug-in workaround (which works for some, not for others, and can break with VLC updates); then, most recently you ask how click to pause could work while retaining VLC functionality (paraphrasing) - it seems your second comment is answered, at least in part, by your first: that it is possible to have click-to-pause from within the VLC UI - the fuller answer, tying your two lines of thinking together, and that could satisfy the many users frustrated by this missing feature, would be to add the feature to VLC, natively, and add a switch option in the preferences that allows VLC to operate as it was initially intended, per your preference--clicking works with DVD menus--and that optionally allows VLC to operate as [dare I say] the vast majority of users use VLC today, on video files devoid of DVD menus - as it appears from your recent post (and post's recency) that you are still open to considering suggestions on this issue, and since it remains a sore point for a significant portion of your user base, almost all of whom surely love VLC despite this handicap, I hope you take to heart my thoughts on this and, challenging though it may prove to be, "fix" what we believe to be broken - thanks again for all you do to make our lives more enjoyable with your wonderful software!

MPC-HC program can do this! It's great, you can click to pause, even with the DVD menus!

It does not pause when you click on a DVD menu link, but it pauses if you click on video.

I'm sure it can work, but if not pause to click is still better than DVD menu, because not many people watching DVD now anyway.

I know maybe is not easy for you do the coding. If not know how to do the coding, maybe can ask the MPC-HC for helps

I think they will willing help you

This is exactly what I was looking for.
At first when I didn't have a normal video program I used VLC.
Then I got to know MPC-HC then I used VLC less because it was less comfortable.
Now wanted to use it again and searched for "How to fast forward the video the same way as in MPC-HC" and it didn't word at start. After I have tried to use the default "ALT+arrows" got out of the program, opening it changing to "Arrow" closing, opening VLC again and it worked :)

Now I have searched for the "Pause and play" that MPC-C has.
I guess in the current version they will not do it.
I hope it will be in the new one (3).

Cheers for the good work.

This has long been a basic standard feature of other players, often also along with sensibly being able to click and drag the window around having pressed on the video image itself. The dvd menu argument is moot as all other players handle that, when hovering over a menu active zone it simply doesn't pause but runs the menu handling instead.

It absolutely is something VLC is lacking from it's out of box experience, and pointing to plugins is not sufficient, most users don't hunt for plugins and they become unmaintained and stop working as new versions of the software get released anyway.

It's clear there is a user demand for this feature, even an expectation of it being present and disappointment when it's found that it is not.

Obviously I found this thread hunting for the reason it wasn't working, though I had expected it to just be a buried option at the very least.

In fact https://github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-click-plugin does not work with VLC 2.2.6 x64 for me, the plugin appears in the menus, but selecting any of the possible mouse buttons it offers to click to pause, it does nothing other than default VLC behaviour when I click the video, even after restarting the client. So as mentioned above, plugins are not a solution, they go unmaintained.

Demand is a term from the field of economics. And there is actually no demand, or at least not enough to support much of an offer. That is to say, while there have been user requests for over a decade already, there is no paying customer demand. Otherwise, you bet it would be supported since a long time.

Implementing this feature properly while not breaking DVD/BD menus is actually difficult. If you care so badly, patch is welcome.

Meanwhile there are also some external solutions/helpers for Windows users:
AutoHotkey script: https://autohotkey.com/board/topic/7729 ... pauseplay/
Just select, copy and paste the code into a text editor (Notepad) and save as "VLC Click video to pause-play.ahk" file. Then you do not need to install autohotky. You can use compiler from the zip package to convert ahk script to exe file.

X-Mouse Button Control: https://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/xmo ... ontrol.htm
The portable version is also available here. Just double-click the xmbc icon in Windows system tray, then [Import] the VLC Click video to pause-play.xmbcs settings file or set the settings manually and [Apply] changes.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but AFAIK VLC doesn't use the *middle* mouse button for anything, does it? That would avoid the DVD interaction problem that the devs are worried about, and still be a huge win over having to click a 1cm square button on a screen 10ft away.
