Solution to video snapshot resolution

I'm currently using VLC Media Player V 2.1.3 . I've been seeing a lot of posts related to the video snapshot resolution. Simply changing the value from -1, to whatever else you choose, wont work. I've tried it and there has been no change in the size of the snapshot. I did find another way to permanently change the setting, and this makes the capture much larger.

Here are the steps...

1. start VLC and pause the video if one is playing.
2. Click on Tools
3. Click on Preferences
4. On the bottom left of the pop-up window, there is a small box that says " Show settings ". By default, it's set to simple. Click " All ".
5. In the pane on the left, look near the bottom and click once on video. All your options will show up on the right side of the window.
6. Scroll down a little and you will see a boxed area that says " Snapshot ". You will see settings for snapshot width and snapshot height.

This is where you DO NOT want to use the arrow boxes, as changing the values this way DID NOT work on my desktop or for either of my laptops. To the right of the -1, in the width box where it is located, single click and then hit your " backspace " key twice. This will delete the -1 value. Next type in 1280 ( This is your width resolution for the new capture image. Then single click to the right of the -1 on the height, hit backspace twice to delete the -1, and enter 800 ( This is your new height resolution ). DO NOT SAVE YET!! You also have the option of saving in 3 different formats. I use png because it seems render the best picture. And yes, I've tried all three. Pick the format you want the picture saved as, and then click on save.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

I gave you a resolution to go by, but the 1280x 800 was my choice of size. My laptop resolution is 1600x900, but I chose to go smaller. DO NOT go any larger than what your screen resolution is, because it wont come out, wont work at all, or you'll get a bad picture...... I experienced all three. ALSO IMPORTANT!!! When changing the resolution, pick on that is common, like 600x800, 1600x900, 1280x800, and so on.... I found that enter any random numbers, can or will cause issues. On all my rigs, I found that the picture is saved to your " Pictures " folder by default. You are able to change the location by going back to snapshot settings. If you've messed up on any settings and find VLC acting up or not working, follow steps 1-5 and at the bottom of the window click " Reset Preferences ". This will bring you back to the installation default preferences and everything should work as it did before changes were made.

Hope this helps at least some of the hundreds of posts from people who are or were lost with this issue.
