Why does VLC jump in approx 5 min increments on timeline?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Why does VLC jump in approx 5 min increments on timeline?

Postby j_hallgren » 10 Feb 2007 21:06

I'm a recent new user, and like what I see thus far...but...when I'm playing back a saved MP4 file, and wanted to jump ahead about 1 min, it seems to only want to jump fwd/back in about 5 min increments instead of to where I've clicked with mouse. Is there some hidden setting that controls this behavior? I've looked but don't see anything.

I can drag the pointer and then it'll resume playing at that point, but that's not as quick and efficient when using just a touchpad only.

No, I was unaware of those keyboard shortcuts...but I'm thus presuming doing this strictly by clicking with a touchpad (via left-mouse button only) is not possible?

Modify them in the preferences.

I saw where one can modify the length of time defined for a 'long jump" in the preferences, which I did (changed from 300 down to 120)...but that still doesn't appear to affect the jump when using strictly the mouse/touchpad...as it still jumps in 5 min increments.

So given that I've got about 1 1/2 hrs experience with VLC, and have looked thru all the preferences but didn't see anything that seems to relate to this, where exactly do I change this behavior?

You have two choices.

1. Wait for 0.9.0 and the QT4 interface.

2. Use the skins2 interface now.

Thank you for the prompt answer!
I guess I'll just have to wait for 0.9.0 (and hope this control is added to default), as I tried the skins2 and found it (for me) not as easy to follow or get around in as default...not only that, but while in skins2 mode, the keyboard hotkeys for JUMP didn't work so while I could move via mouse, IF I wanted to move via keys, then that was not possible...so one or the other seems to be the choice at present.
