MIDI Support

Now I know MIDI support might seem a bit old school. I'm a relatively new user of VLC and I love it. It has all but replaced Winamp for me though there are those rare occasions that I still use Winamp and most of those times are for MIDI files. I personally would have put MIDI support in the standard basket for a media player. I know VLC was created for network streaming but I'm sure many people would take advantage of this feature.

It is not in VLC because midi need synthetiser and sounds libs that are not really cross platform.

To update this topic, it looks like fluidsynth will be used in next VLC major version (VLC 1.1.0, the end the this year, maybe around October to December who know).

That's good to hear there is a cross-platform library/plugin that is importantly open-source too. Until now I have only used KM Player to playback any of my MIDI files, so it's positive to hear it will be introduced into the mighty VLC by fall this year

It could be backported before, but I have no incentives for it.

Just to clarify, I read http://www.remlab.net/op/vlc-midi.shtml to indicate that fluidsynth support is available in certain builds of vlc.

Does this, and the preceding discussion, mean that it is not in the pre-built win32 1.0.1 - but that there is a possibility that it could be included in later releases?

Or does it mean that there is something about win32 platform which makes it more difficult to include the fluidsynth?

I'd use vlc as a midi player if I could ...

no, VLC 1.0.1 doesn't have midi, just 1.1 builds have it. And it doesn't work.
