Confusing abbreviations for codecs used in VLC

Postby celkukec » 07 Jan 2007 11:54

Can anyone help confirm/correct this list (0.8.6a version):

Transcoding options:

Video codecs on the list for transcoding:

mp1v = MPEG-1 Video
mp2v = MPEG-2 Video
mp4v = MPEG-4 Video (Advanced Simple Profile ?)
div1 = (DIVX 3.x ?)
div2 = (DIVX 4.x ?)
div3 = (DIVX 5.x ?)
h263 = H.263 (original, + or ++ ?)
h264 = H.264
WMV1 = Windows Media Video 7
WMV2 = Windows Media Video 8
MJPG = Motion JPEG
theo = Theora

There is no WMV3 (Windows Media Video 9) on this list, but Streaming/Transcoding Wizard supports it. Can we use it? Can developers add it to the drop-down menu?

Audio codec on the list for transcoding:

mpga = (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 1, largely outdated ?)
mp2a = (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 ?)
mp3 = MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3
mp4a = AAC ?
a52 = AC3 ?
vorb = Vorbis (Garf, aoTuV or MegaMix tunned ?)
flac = FLAC
spx = Speeex
s16l = Uncompressed integer 16 bit (what codec ?)
fl32 = Uncompressed floating 32 bit (what codec ?)

Thank you.
