M-Audio Digital Out (A/52 )in Panther doesn't work

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

It's VLC that needs changes.
The new CoreAudio versions just trigger a bug that wasn't noticed before 10.3

We are looking for people who can fix this, but apparently there is noone in the world who watches multichannel videos, has a multichannel audio device, and knows CoreAudio.....

Hi, I am having problems too with an M-Audio soundcard, but this time the Firewire 410. VLC doesn't even show the card as available Audio Device when playing normal DivX/XviD files. Curiosly, when playing files with AC3 audio, the card shows up as available device, but doesn't output any sound (some error with being unable to set a buffer size, sorry don't have an appropriate file at hand to give the exact message).

I'm on OS X 10.3.3 with latest M-Audio drivers for the card and just freshly downloaded VLC 0.7.2.

Still no good

I've checked 0.7.2 on 10.3.4, but no change yet

No as said before you will need to wait for someone to fix VLC.

DJ, if you have a multichannel device, could you code the fix? I think we need to collect some donations and get a device sent to the devs. I will talk to my contacts over at M-Audio and see if they might be able to lend a device or two out. If not, I can put in $10. Who else here could put out a few bucks to get this working again? With the ability to record HDTV streams on the mac now, I would love to be able to play them back with ac3. Sonica's and Revolution 7.1's are pretty cheap nowadays. If we got $200 we could send two revo's to the devs. This really needs to be addressed soon. DJ, who else works on the mac port? I know you guys have lack of documentation and are coding blind, but any chance you guys could play around and see if you could get something to work?

Yes, DJ, could you do it if you have the device?

Probably. But then i still lack a 5:1 audio set. however, when this is there, i might be motivated to buy a cheap dolby home cinema set.

Everyone send a few $$ or Euros Along

Postby Scott » 06 Jun 2004 06:50

I started this tread and I am going to send a couple of $ to DJ. Hope everyone else who can will help out. VLC is great and getting better. I want to use Digital A/52 instead of the analog 7.1! Digital just sounds better. Digital Stereo PCM sound is so much clearer than analog when I compare the 2.

how can we know that contributing through the main page will find it's way to you DJ? I want ot be sure that money I give doesn't end up in something else. It must go toward fixing the mac coreaudio problem.

I've committed a fix for the "failed to set buffer size: [nope]" issue.

Please test the latest nightly build and provide feedback.

The failed to set buffer size error is gone, but no audio is outputted. Switching to stereo sends audio through the digital out, and the built-in speaker also works. Just no digital multi-channel signal coming out of the out. This was tested on both a G5 mac using the optical out, and a revolution 7.1 using a co-axial out going to both a logitech z-680 system, and a sony receiver. Good work, at least some progress has been made!

Still the same here too. And I can't even choose my Firewire 410 as Audio Out device when playing files without AC3 track. (iBook / 10.3.4)

Anyway, looking forward to further development in that direction. :D

I haven't been able to test if AC3 over SPDIF actually works because my decoder is 2000 km away.

Anyone got a long cable? :)

Jon Lech -

Great Job. I downloaded your most recent build and it works like a champion in Digital A/52 using my Revolution Digital Out. I am running 10.3.4 on a DP867 Power Mac. Digital Coax connection to my Integra DTR 6.4 Receiver. Tested Dolby Digital and DTS. Now my home theater is almost complete.

THANKS A MILLION!

BRILLIANT! Funny how that seemed so effortless. What, 2 days and it works? I have been waiting almost 8 months for this. Thank you so much! Works perfectly on my revo and G5 to both a receiver and Logitech set. Keep it up. I will be making a donation in your name. Release this sucker!

With 10.3.4 G4 and M-audio Sonica, it works perfect with dvd, and VIDEO_TS folder, but it doesn´t work with divx files with ac3. Simply there doesn´t show up the menu.
Otherwise PERFECT. We have been waiting so long for this. Now you are my personal hero! Later I will post the log.
