Is libdvdcss included with the standard windows version?

Right, so libdvdcss is slightly controversial, as we all know. My question: is it included by default on the sandard Windows install version? The reason I ask is that we are using VideoLan on a CD that we plan to distribute to schools, etc. We use it only for playing some MPEGs, so we don't need the DVD feature at all. If it is included, and if I were to remove it, which files should I delete, and will that break anything? Is libdvd_plugin.dll just a wraper for libdvdcss, or is libdvdcss in that file? Is libdvdcss in the standard source tarball?

we were actually planning to send you a review form to include the vlc media player into your next OpenCD release. It won't be necessary, apparently

In order to have a vlc package without libdvdcss, you need to recompile it with the --disable-dvdcss option.

As the compiling process under windows is a huge pain in the ass, we may provide the special package if you want.

Just tell us if you prefer a 0.6.2 version (if you're in a hurry) or rather wait for the next release.

Hi Murray,

Thanks for your reply. VLC is already being debated over in our forum and looks likely for the next release. I don't know if you are aware of it, but it _is_ actually on the current release as well, but in a supporting role, being used to play some MPEGs. So, in that sense, we are in a bit of a hurry to patch this one up (we put it on the disc before we realized that it could play DVDs) In the meantime I may have found a solution myself. I deleted the 3 dvd_plugin.dll files after which it could no longer play DVDs, but everything else seemed to work. Is there a problem with doing this? The MPEGs seem to play just fine.

By the time we release our next disc, in 3 or 4 moths VLC will be a 0.7.something I guess. It would then also be nice to have some help with making a non-DVD version for our English CD, and possibly a DVD capable one for the French one (work in progress). It would also be nice to bundle some skins and more documetation (ie. from the help-menu) at that point.

Sorry to be so picky about this DVD stuff. If you are interested, you can find some of the reasoning for it here in our forum.

The standard source of VLC does not include the libdvdcss code.
And if you remove the libdvdcss_plugin.dll then the windows version doesn't have it either. So for binary you only need to repackge VLC.
For MacOSX a similiar approach is required.

we will provide you a non-dvd playing 0.6.2 before the end of the week. We actually did not know that vlc was used in the current OpenCD release.

0.7 should be released in a few weeks, apparently, so you will have it ready for your next release.

Hope those efforts will help you to be a bit less picky about the preferences interface :)

Heh. We are famous for being picky, so please dont take offense That is how we came to pick only 18 apps for the CD out of 100s of candidates. I look forward to your 0.7 which looks set to go on our 1.4 in 3 months or so.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the 0.6.2 version for our current CD. I've deleted these 3 files: libdvdplay_plugin.dll, libdvdread_plugin.dll, and libdvd_plugin.dll and it works just fine. (there is no libdvdcss_plugin.dll)
