Help with VLC on Suse 10.1

Postby socrates399 » 08 Dec 2006 19:06

Hello Everyone -

I just want to say that I love VLC media player and use it all the time on my windoze box so I thought I'd give it a shot installing on my suse 10.1 system. I made it past a ton of rpm dependencies (I am using yast), but now I am finally stuck and I am really hoping that someone can help me.

System uname : 2.6.16.13-4-default #1 Wed May 3 04:53:23 UTC 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

The dependency I am stuck on is:

"Unresolved dependencies:
Installing vlc-0.8.5-2.pm.8.i686[Local packages]
There are no installable providers of libdbus-1.so.1 for vlc-0.8.5-2.pm.8.i686[Local packages]"

I found a tip that said I should do a symbolic link (ln -s) from libdbus-1.so.2 to libdbus-1.so.1, but this didn't seem to do anything:

ls /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.1 -l
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2006-12-08 19:08 /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.1 -> /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.2

That is, I still get the same dependency error.

I am pretty much a linux noob, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Blake

I found a tip that said I should do a symbolic link (ln -s) from libdbus-1.so.2 to libdbus-1.so.1, but this didn't seem to do anything:

ls /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.1 -l
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2006-12-08 19:08 /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.1 -> /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.2

That is, I still get the same dependency error.
This will not work, because the RPM database will still find no info about a RPM providing "libdbus-1.so.1". Are all your RPMs up to date and are you using the latest RPM from PackMan? If this is the case contact the maintainer of the vlc PackMan RPM about your Problem.

It may be from intrest for you to take a look here:

impossible to install vlc under SuSE 10.1

Postby leon » 14 Dec 2006 19:24

I spent a lot of time trying to install vlc under Suse 10.1.
It is a nightmare, always something is missing...
You get a fast installation with ubuntu or Mandriva
so where is the solution with SuSE 10.1?
I could not find a successful post on this topic.
any track is welcome

impossible to install vlc under SuSE 10.1 following

Postby leon » 15 Dec 2006 09:33

Of course I did what is on the Download SuSe page but its fails with message

Aucun fournisseur de libavahi-common.so.3 définissable pour vlc-0.8.6-2.1i586[20061214-173633]

So its absolutely wrong to write in vlc download page:
"Select it and click Accept to install it with all it's dependencies."

On the forum, following topic address the same problem but proposed solution doesn't work too.

I could not find a forum proposing solution that works:
how to install vlc on suse 10.1 ?

thanks

Léon

Did you insert your SuSE DVD/CD at installation time?
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html
Go to Software Management and enter VLC in the searchbox and search for it. Select it and click Accept to install it with all it's dependencies. This might require the SUSE CD or DVD.
You can also add ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribu ... nst-source or a mirror to your Yast Installation Source.

hi

The easiest would be to add the repository at
http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distri ... urce/suse/
to the yum sources (no refresh needed, as it's a static repo, no updates are floating in there)

The missing dependency for you can be found at:
http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distri ... 7.i586.rpm (for i586, replace i586 with x86_64 if nescessary)

Regards,
Dominique

OK
answering to Teetrinker
I did not get a request for inserting SuSE DVD/CD at installation time

answering to dimstar
adding the first recommended repository
http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distri ... urce/suse/
takes a very long time and I got the nice following message
rug failed to add a ZYPP service:
ERREUR : Service '20061216-095309' at 'http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distri ... urce/suse/' already exists on this client.
so so .....
followed by
ERREUR : Service '20061216-085451' at 'http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... /SuSE/10.1' already exists on this client.
followed by
sources synchronization failed with this clientsaving anyway ?
I choosed yes ... you never know

But there I got the clock running during a long long time.
So I have time to think...
that SuSe 10.1 is no more a usable Linux distro
there are too much systems to update (badly) yast, smart, apt-get.....

its a nightmare
I better move all my computers to ubuntu,
ubuntu upgrades in a few seconds
no tricks
safe and clean

Ok the clock is still running I must kill the task now
Launch again installation support add repository...
now I try only to add vlc repository.. it takes about minutes to close
time is money you know
the clock is still running.. I wondering what this program is trying to do during all this time ?
Five minutes now Save this file.
Reboot an retry
Is this Linux ?

Rebooted
I got the same error message as above:
ERREUR : Service '20061216-085451' at 'http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... /SuSE/10.1' already exists on this client.
So so I try to install vlc from yast
yast can not find it
congratulations
So let us try with smart....in an other message !!!!
