WMV won't play

Postby solidfox » 14 Dec 2006 16:04

Playing WMV in the .avi container with version 0.8.6 I'm getting only sound and the error that there exists no proper codec for "fourcc 'WMV3'"... still no WMV support? What's going on?

Thanks!

Fox

First of all, make sure that VLC 0.8.6 is actually used (have a look at the about window in the VLC menu). Perhaps, you got multiple versions installed and an older one is being used...

Furthermore, are you using the PowerPC or the Intel build? on which Mac OS version?

It's definetly being used... I've been using nightlies for some time, I'm on the latest version of Tiger for intel and I've tried with the UB VLC and the intel-only build... no luck...

Here's one of the files that won't play, see if it works with your VLC: http://kazeshin.spymac.com/SDK1.avi

I joined this group today to try and discover why I can not play .avi files using the latest (0.8.6) version of VLC.

I tried to play the file that Solidfox showed using VLC but got this message "ps: cannot peek main: no suitable demux module"

Any help would greatly appreciated.

VLC could not recognize the .avi header. The file is unplayable. (Usually broken download)

A WMV3 avi
Interesting. that wasn't tested much i guess. I'm not sure if the file is proper or not, but i did notice it makes Flip4Mac crash, so it doesn't bode well for the file itself.

I would like to confirm that since using the new version 0.8.6 I don't appear to have any problems opening an .avi file.

Thank you.

I'm also having problems with WMV3 .avi files. When I open the file solidfox posted I get the following error:

access_file: seeking too far
access_file: seeking too far
access_file: seeking too far
ffmpeg: cannot open codec (Windows Media Video 3)
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Which is only a little different from the error I get when I play any of the many other WMV3 .avi files I have:

ffmpeg: cannot open codec (Windows Media Video 3)
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

To be through I downloaded Flip4Mac WMV 2.1 and upgraded to it. As The DJ observed solidfox's file did make it crash, however with the other files I have it was hit and miss, with a lot of misses. One of them plays properly, but the others I tried have no audio or start out fine, then the audio gets choppy and eventually dies. Back when I was first paying attention to Flip4Mac they had problems with WMV3 and MP3 in .avi containers, and I guess this is more of that. Also, a while back some people seemed to have success playing WMV3 in the 0.8.6 nightlies, and I tried them all and still only got the same error as above.

I'd really like to see WMV3s working in VLC, so although I don't know how I'd get the files I have hosted, because of their size, I'd be happy email them or something to anyone who thinks they can do some good.

[edit] oh, and I forgot, I'm running 10.4.8 on a 1.25 GHz Mac mini with a gig of RAM

I get this problem when I try to watch certain anime encodes. The problem always seems to be that the file, usually an .avi file type, has an embedded WMV video codec. I can get sound through VLC player fine though. The funny thing is that I can see video with no sound on Quicktime, and sound with no video on VLC.

Hah isn't that great? I have like 5 anime series I can't watch because of this. :\

I get the same problem with .mov files that contain WMV3 data. I have files like that because I used LyFox to download music videos from Yahoo music Quicktime automatically opens them and then I save them to my hard drive and Quicktime always puts them in the MOV container file.
Here's what VLC tells me when I open the files:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Oh, and kind of off the subject, but how do I get VLC to be the default program for mms links (like the ones LyFox produces) so I don't have to use Quicktime?
