Discussion on the (deprecated) VideoLAN Server application as well as the miniSAPserver stream announcer. This is not about VLC!

VideoLAN limitations?

Postby crispy » 09 Dec 2006 01:07

I read the PDF files regarding setting up and using VideoLAN, but I have some questions now.

Using VideoLAN as a server for internet access to live streams, is there a limit to the number of concurrent viewers that VideoLAN can handle in a Unicast setup? (Obviously bandwidth provides limitations, but assuming I have a lot of bandwidth - what's VideoLAN's limit?) The reason I am asking is that the documentation that I found makes it sound like you need to input a viewer's IP address, as if VideoLAN is going to PUSH the stream to the viewer. As an example, using the Windows Media Server, all I need is a link on a website to a metafile and any number of viewers can connect at the same time to pull the stream. (Again, there are bandwidth and CPU limitations I know.) Does VideoLAN support this kind of streaming?
