Prompt to Install 0.7.2, but it's already installed!

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Prompt to Install 0.7.2, but it's already installed!

Postby Telstar » 01 Jun 2004 05:48

Hi,
Windows XP Home
IE6/Firefox 0.8
VideoLan 0.7.2
P2P

I recently upgraded to VLC Media Player 0.7.2.
At the time I downloaded I still had version 0.6.2.exe in the Folder.
Using my P2P I attempted to preview partial downloads with VLC
(right click on file...choose Preview With....VLC 0.7.2)
However, each time I would get this.....

Image

Thinking there was a conflict with the older version I did a
clean uninstall of version 0.6.2 as well as 0.7.2 to start fresh.
The download (0.7.2) from a site recommended by the P2P program I use (I will refrain from mentioning it here).

I am still getting the prompt to install 0.7.2 even though it has already been installed and is working fine when viewing completed videos.

Why am I being prompted to install VLC when it is already installed?

Any suggestions?

Any reason VLC 0.7.2 cannot be used for previewing a partial download?

Also, before downloading the new version I checked everywhere I could for any instructions as to whether to uninstall the old version or not. Kind of a moot point since I have already done that but, can 0.7.2 be installed "over" an older version?. Just curious now.

Thanks,
Telstar

Yes you can install a new version over the old one, even though it is recommended to uninstall the old one first so that you don't end-up with stale files from the previous version which might slightly slow-down VLC.

As for your problem, it seems to be a problem with your P2P software.

Maybe the P2P program is opening the installer instead of the .exe program file.

Maybe the P2P program is opening the installer
instead of the .exe program file.
hmm.....interesting speculation.

Right now I'm considering uninstalling 0.7.2 and downloading
from another site (probably won't make a difference though).

Could you give me a little more detailed information about
what I can do if this is the case.
How can I direct the P2p to the .exe instead of the installer?

I am an idiot but I can follow simple directions...lol

I see in my my (XP Home) Control Panel>Add/Remove it
shows the VideoLan 0.7.2. Also in Start>All Programs>VideoLan,
there is an Uninstall VideoLan. I can also do a
Search>VideoLan and delete what is found there.

Could you post a link to a reliable download site or point me
in the right direction? I'd like to be sure the next install is done
correctly.

Thanks for your help,
Telstar

How can I direct the P2p to the .exe instead of the installer?
That depends on witch p2p you're using. You need to look in the preferences, in the video preview section and if there is a browse button, look for the file "vlc.exe" in the directory where you installed VLC.
