Transcoding on the fly

Hello everyone

I am a noob in Vlc, and I'm trying to stream an avi movie to my amino stb.
Since the amion stb can only receive mpeg2 I need to transcode the avi to mpeg2 on the fly (or at least that was my intention)

I have been able to stream a DVD so I know the streaming works, but when I try to stream the Avi I get blank screen. So my questions are these:

1. Is it possible to transcode avi on the fly?
2. Can anyone help me do it?

I did try this on win XP, but I also have ubuntu 6.10 edgy eft, so if it is easier on either os, I have no problem with either.

Hmmm, not me. But here's my two cents:
Once you configured VLC to correctly open the source (no matter if its a DVD or an avi file), then you can process the video according to the VLC output formats. VLC is "decoding" the file/stream first, and then it either "encodes" the file/stream again, or simply displays it on the screen. And these are tasks (decoding/encoding) that happen independently from each other. In other words: if you can play a file with VLC, then you can encode it, too.
If you haven't yet tried it, you might want to have a look at the "stream/save" options of the VLC GUI that you can find at the "Open File" dialogue.
