Transcoding into PSP format?

Postby Guest » 19 Oct 2005 16:35

I have been trying to transcoding some DVDs, MPEG and DivX into PSP MPEG4 format but I have been unable to find a codec setting that works with my PSP.

On the Open dialog I have Stream output checked with the following settings:
Output Method: File checked, Filename: M4V00001.MP4
Encapsulation Method: MP4
Transcoding options:
Video codec checked: mp4v, Bitrate: 32kb/s, Scale: 0.5
Audio codec checked: mp4a, Bitrate: 16kb/s, Channels: 2

Code: Select all

:sout=#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=32,scale=0.5,acodec=mp4a,ab=16,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=file,mux=mp4,url="E:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01\M4V00001.MP4"}}
When it finishes encoding it plays fine in QuickTime, but when move it over into my E:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01\ folder and try and access it on my PSP I get the message "Incompatible Data".

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or does any one know a setting which works with PSPs?

Thanks for any help! :)

As far as I know PSP uses its own proprietary version of MP4. If you want to convert you video to PSP compatible format, I would recommend you to take a look on this application

Ah ok, seems odd though that QuickTime and VideoLAN can still play them, unless some app I installed secretly installed the codec for it.

I would definately also like to know if this can be done..

I have a Dreambox, and what i would love to have happen is to :

1. Plug in the USB to my PSP
2. Start stream from dreambox to my VLC client
3. Transcode directly from the live stream to the video folder on the PSP.

That would be a very awesome way to "record" video directly into psp format.

Why does not this work? Ive tried about whatever transcoding effect i can think of, and from what i can gather, i can play PSP coded videos just fine with VLC (video are coded using ImTOO mobile converter).. and there it said the format is mp4v and mp4a for video and audio. Why does this not work if i do the same in VLC?

Anyone got any ideas?

convert video to psp format

yes it can be done. I managed to accomplish using a combination of vlc and another program called 3gp_converter.exe. first I used vlc to stream my *.iso of my dvd to mpg format then just drop that file on 3gp and it will convert and compress it to the psp format. managed to get a 4 gig movie down to 230 megs and the quality is good enough for a 10 year old.

Well.. It is no problem to use a program to make 3gp or similar "psp friendly" files.. But was this really done "real-time"?

I want this to happen real-time, and not recoding dvd movies or streams at a later stage tho, cos there are plenty of tools doing that already

You can use yasa psp video converter to transfer video to mp4. Its built-in psp mp4 video codec works great.

It can be done with VLC alone!

I've used this cmd line on windows to transcode direct to psp-compatible video:

vlc.exe -v -I RC dvdsimple://D:@0 :sout="#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=512,acodec=mp4a,ab=16,
samplerate=24000,deinterlace,audio-sync,channels=2}
:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,url='OUTPUTFILENAME.mp4'}" vlc:quit
--sout-transcode-width=368 --sout-transcode-height=208
--aspect-ratio=width:height

Now all I need to do is figure out how to get the audio gain bumped up to compensate for the psp's anemic little speakers!

Have you had succeeded streaming from DSHOWCAM --> VLC on another regular machine (using psp compatible streaming settings)? If not, get that working first then try with the psp/PMPVLC client.

start with a standard streaming setup by follwing the steps here:

http://www.videolan.org/doc/streaming-h ... to-en.html

then try the same with this kind of command-line stream server config:

vlc.exe -v -I RC dvdsimple://D:@0 :sout="#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=512,acodec=mp4a,ab=16,
samplerate=24000,deinterlace,audio-sync,channels=2}
:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,url=':1234'}" vlc:quit
--sout-transcode-width=368 --sout-transcode-height=208
--aspect-ratio=width:height

use url='10.0.1.45:1234'
where 10.0.1.45 is replaced with the address of the client machine

And the client in a similar setup to the first stream setup. THEN you can try with the psp client. Baby steps are the key to isolating technical problems, so if there's a problem with a step, go back to the previous step that worked and build up to the next step part by part to isolate the problem
