Editing video in VLC

Postby andrefrancis » 07 Nov 2006 12:31

VLC seems to be the only medium that views, in both audio and video, my video docs (of any description or persuasion) on my iMac. Those that it doesn't manage to read, I suspect, are probably beyond the pale anyway.

However, I cannot edit them! :(

Is there a plug-in, add-on or other software that can work in conjunction with VLC?

Thanks for viewing and thanks for helping if you can.

VLC is a player and streamer only. In fact, we're pretty much against adding editing functionality to it.
However, you can convert everything that VLC can read to something quicktime-compatible, so you can use QT Pro, iMovie, Final Cut, whatever to edit your files. Have a look at the streaming/exporting wizard. You want a file with MPEG4/mp4v (or in case that you got a bit more time H.264) video, mp4a audio and MP4 as encapsulation format. If you got any questions about this, search the forum (I explained that a couple of times already) or feel free to ask here.

Thanks Fkuehne.

I am away from home until tomorrow evening, but I am looking forward to trying out your solution then. Thanks for your help on this :)

... well I tried it ... and it didn't work! :(

Quicktime  doesn't want to know.

I used the streaming wizard to save as mpeg4 on both video and audio, but the document produced had no extension and also double-clicking caused a dialog inviting me to choose an application with which to open it. I chose QT ... and it gave the same message as it gave to the old file ... " error opening movie. This movie could not be opened".

Have I done something wrong ... or ... is there anything else to try?

My docs are (I think) mpeg2 produced by a Sony Camcorder.

Thanks
Andre

Did you choose MP4 as encapsulation format? Are you using VLC 0.8.5 or higher? (earlier versions produced bad files from time to time) Is QuickTime 7.x installed on your Mac?
