Feel free to implement it, next 7-zip support?
This is one of the reasons that the VLC devs are so reluctant to work on this feature, people will demand support for more file formats and eventually VLC will be able to decode everything for what is quite a niche feature. I think all we are asking for here is support for .RAR split-files.

I know that they are split into .RARs for transferring reasons but I (and many others) like the maintain the state in which they were downloaded for legacy purposes (say if someone needed a specific part of the archive, you could send that instead of the entire film).

Please consider this VLC developers, and thanks for the great software!

I doubt XBMC devs have reverse engineered new RAR format.
No becuase they don't need to, RarLab (the people behind WinRAR archiver) releases the up-to-date source code (and DLL library if you rather use that) of UnRAR on a regular basis these days, and that is what is used in XBMC, ...makes it easy for them to keep up with the latest RAR versions.

I just checked that VLC already plays RAR Files fine.. He just stops at the end of the first archive part.. thats pretty sad, i really love the multi part support xbmc mplayer offers and i hope that vlc will support this feature in the future.. its the only feature missing to make it the perfect video player.

many thanks

Can we please get some sort of reply from the developers on this issue?

Same reply as before: we're not coding this :) Feel free to submit patches to the source code.

No, because there are many other things on the wish lists. There are feature requests that have been asked a lot more than this, but not on the same topic

Like a new interface, new codecs (wmv3, rv, ...) or subtitles improvement.

The feature request you are asking could be implemented, but there are not enough developpers on VLC now. Look at trac to see all the developement that should be going on...

If someone can dig up opensource (GPL compliant) unrar library that supports newest RAR format and multi-RAR files it would be more likely.
UnRAR source doesn't seem to be GPL compliant.

I have tried different freeware but it doesn't seems to work. I hope you have an answer for me that makes me happy :D

This may seem to be a OT thing but nopp, I downloaded the source for VLCRAAR to see if I could make som chances but no it seems that I'm stuck becouse of the .exe thing....very innoying.

Does anyone have a solution for playing a video from an incomplete rar set?

Another method

Perhaps the dev team could implement support for the command line functions of many archiving programs? An example of this is the way Zoom Player handles archives. You set up a string of commands with wildcards for each individual format.

*Edit*
Would this violate the GPL as the dev team reads it?
It could always be left as an option, not set up for use with any binary by default...

If downloading unpacking binaries is left for users, it is completely okay. But using external programs has been against "VLC philosophy".

you can use 7zip or something like that's dlls and use it to even open zip, bzip, bzip2, tar, gzip, 7zip, jar, cab, msi, exe, etc.

On Linux, blindly use VLC, SMPlayer, Kaffeine, GXine, Totem and MPlayer

Well I found the fix to enable this to work with VLC Media Player!

1.
Download UNRAR here: http://www.rarlab.com/rar/unrarw32.exe and extract into your VLC Directory.

2. Download VLCRAAR here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=167742 and extract into your VLC Directory.

3. Drag and Drop RAR Files onto it open the rar file with it.

This took me ages of digging/coding to find so I hope you enjoy!
I do all off step you wrot. but when i drag an drop RAR file on vlccraar.exe or execute it this message had been show:
Java found but javaw.exe seems to be missing.
what can i do?

You have Java Runtime installed? If you do, can you find javaw.exe from your computer?

@spraks

Is it possible to make it autoplay when using "Open with..." ?
So I don't have to klick the play button.

Great tool btw :)

//LuffarJoh
Add the following to your registry, and modify the paths if nessecary (sadly %windir% and %programfiles% dont wort in the shell :( )

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WinRAR\shell\Play With VLC] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WinRAR\shell\Play With VLC\command] @="C:\\Windows\\system32\\cmd.exe /C \"C:\\Program Files\\WinRAR\\UnRAR.exe p -inul %1 | C:\\Program Files\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe --avi-index=2 --file-caching 2000 -\""
Maybe someone could improve the code by using the command "START "title" /D<working dir> /MIN <cmd>" for minimizing the command window and for the correct loading of subtitles (-> Working dir)
//Edit: And maybe a batch script for closing unrar.exe after closing vlc ^^

Is the rarplayer normally intended for other players than VLC? e.g. MPC?
