Error starting VLC

So I installed VLC and all it's dependencies (except libeml and libmatroska because it wasn't in the repository and the make install failed for unknown reasons to make them shared libraries) on SuSE 10.1. And while it appeared to install alright, when i attempt to run it I get the error:

vlc: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.51: undefined symbol: faacDecOpen

faac and faad should be installed properly as far as I know, although faad gives strange error messages whenever I try to run it on it's own as opposed to faac which seems fine. Any advice on getting vlc up and running would be appreciated, it's been one of my largest projects to date to get it to run on this setup hah, so many libraries, so many failing make install's.

Just use the right faad2 version for EXACT yours Linux distrib.. I use SUSE 10.1 and replaced faad2-2.1-0.20050201.0.1.102plf.i586 to faad2-2.0-0.pm.8.i586 and it helps!

I'm not sure how you managed to replace faad2, as any attempt I make to uninstall it gives me an error based on dependencies on other rpm-s that vlc needs at the level *they* are already at. There seems to be quite a lot of conflicting dependencies in vlc.

Should this be a bug report?

Update your faad2 version with:

rpm -Uvh name.rpm

Or use

Code: Select all

smart upgrade --update

to update all RPM.
Or use Yast to update to a newer version. You have to update your PackMan installation source.

Thanks for pointing out that I needed to do an upgrade to faad2. However, that doesn't change the error message. Neither does adding -vvv to the vlc command. Based on what I'd seen elsewhere, also tried upgrading the ffmpeg rpm, without any change in the results.

I see you recommend using a program called 'smart'. Presumably this is not a SuSE program?

Which vlc rpm version have you installed?

rpm -qa | grep vlc

The version that fit to the latest version of the needed(dependence) rpm should be:
vlc-0.8.5-2.pm.8

Did you refresh your YAST PackMan installation source before you installed vlc?

Smart should be one the SuSE DVD since SuSE 10.0.

Using YAST and a boatload of installation sources (Packman wasn't working right), got a viable VLC to run...only now, it won't do anything without wxWidgets. More investigations ahead...but not tonight.
