Universal GUI (UGUI)

Postby Dev » 08 Aug 2006 00:30

Hi, I am not a programmer but as a user of VLC, I think the comunnity should colaborate to design a UNIQUE User Interface for all the Operating Systems and change the VLC (cone) icon as well. Is there any GUI Contest?

I mean something like iTunes, It's the same in Windows and Mac OS X.
Even the goal is to use minimal hardware requirements it would be nice a user friendly GUI so people get impressed by a first view. Currently Skins are not very implemented I think.

Thanks for reading, This is my user experience!
Thanks again for this great service!

The cone is the symbol of VLC, so i doubt that it will ever disappear :)

Concerning the unique GUI, I think it is not possible either. Each OS has its own look and feel, and an application from OSX would look strange on Windows, for example (yes, even iTunes :)). Some people don't care about having a consistent look and feel for their applications (particularly on Windows, I think), and that's why we have skins: to allow customizing the interface completely. But since many other people do care about it, we try to maintain 'classical' interfaces. FYI, the OSX interface of VLC shares no code with the default Windows/Linux interface, because on OSX the UI guidelines are so different...
Currently Skins are not very implemented I think.
What do you mean exactly? That there are not enough skins? or that the skins lack functionality or eye-candiness?
We indeed lack skins (even though we now support winamp2 skins), and a contest will probably be done one day...
Concerning the functionality, i guess it depends on the particular skin, on your expectations and on the possibilities of the skins2 engine...

Yes, Thanks for your opinion! If it's so difficult to have the same GUI in every OS, i think it's better to set a "nice" GUI, because I have realied that many of my friends...who understand and dont understand much about computer care a lot the Design, ease of use (configuration). And a NICE ICON (with glass effect, like OSX) also impresses in general. Actually VLC lacks on GUI (with respect to developers) because it's not "very nice". And when u change a to a skin it's not set to default, so if i open a file it opens me in the original GUI.

Thanks for reading!

You can configure VLC to open the skin by default. See viewtopic.php?t=20277 for example.
