I have also configured Tilgin (formerly i3 Micro Technology) set-top boxes to work with VLC (Although if I had my choice between working with Tilgin or Amino set-top boxes, I would opt for Amino set-top boxes every time). With respect to (IGMP) multicast operations however, there should be fairly wide interoperability between VLC and set-top boxes, it is only with respect to RTSP that I would expect the interoperability list to be more exclusive.

I would note that there is also a list of set-top boxes that VLC has been purported to operate with on the Wiki at http://wiki.videolan.org/index.php/Set_Top_Boxes, although I can only confirm operation with Amino and Tilgin set-top boxes from personal experience.
