Windows SmartPhone Streaming

Postby wlarsong » 19 Jul 2006 19:42

Since there is no Windows CE or Smartphone Forum i will try it here:

I am using VLC on a SuSE Linux Laptop and using the http protocol to stream out with asf encapsulation and DIV3 codec at 16kbps ( i know sixteen KB sounds small but stay with me.

Using the http, i am streaming to a Windows Smartphone the Motorola Q. I tried to recieve the stream with VLC PocketPC edition but on the Q I get a " menu failed to generate error.

Using the EVDO boardband network provided with verizon wireless, i am able recieve this stream with the TCPMP media player. I am getting picture with TCPMP but it constantly freezes and has a HUGE lag.

ASF is the only encapsulation method that seems to work, and DIV3 works i have not tried any other codec but has anyone else had any success in this matter.

My goal is to stream Satalite Television over the internet to my phone, anyone have any success or an way to fix VLC Pocket PC for the Q. So i can use UDP.

VLC's Windows CE version was never finished and has been abandoned. It is maintained on the website in the hope that someone will pick it up again. Also keep in mind that there is no support for 3gp.

I don't know what Verizon is claiming in up and down speed on EDGE, but this does rather sound like the problem.

Also be aware that DivX in a ASF container is recognized as MPEG 43 and seems to have more problems under dshow than VLC.

Generally, I would tend to believe you are being overly optimistic on this one. But please don't let me hinder you as I don't want to rain on any ones parade.

They claim 400kbps-700kbps on the mobile broadband, but from my expierence this seems to be like a lie.

Again I have picture and audio I even had the MJPG codec working but I am thinking that the bandwidth is the bottle neck and that is what is causing the huge lag because I am communicating on protocols that require MTU size to be filled before it releases the data.

UDP seems to be the way to go, I don't mind if I miss frames etc, this is mostly for fun and to see If I could do it.

I am very muched intrested in Windows CE and I have been a HUGE fan of VLC on every platform I work with I always download it.

I am a 4th year Computer Science Major, and I do know C and C++ programming, let me know how I can get involved with the Windows CE project, I would love to poke around at the source.

Try this for checking speed. You will need Java installed.

The source code is available in the Developers section off the main page for VLC.

add a /*

Postby carlog » 26 Jul 2006 19:46

I had the same problem as you. I got it work when I found out the secret....

In pocket wmp on your phone, enter http://yoururlhere/*

Adding the /* is what did the trick for me. And yes, TCPMP also gave me that same huge lag you experienced.

Hope that helps you.
