Freezing of my entire system

Postby Drastic » 14 Jul 2006 07:02

Hello,

Since installing the VLC media player I've had a problem with it crashing half the time.

What usually happens is I will try to play a DVD or media file and it will almost instantly freeze not only the player but my entire computer - I can't even move the mouse or CTR+ALT+DEL (forcing me to restart completely).

To solve this problem I've done two things: a virus scan and tried re-installing the player.

The version I'm using is 8.5 (win32?) and I've got Windows XP.

Hope you can help,
D

Please describe your system (CPU & GPU).

You say XP is this with SP2 and are you current with updates?

Are you having any problems with other types of files?

FlatCat

Freezing Computer - sort of

Postby FlatCat » 15 Jul 2006 09:48

I have just installed vlc .8.5 on a newly installed Win XP SP2 (and all latest updates) with not too many other programs so far.
Everytime I try to use the visualizations, VLC freezes - stops playing song, visualization windows sometimes comes up but doesn't actually display anything.
It doesn't appear to use much extra CPU or memory than before the freeze.
Using task manager to end the program doesn't work.
The only way to get rid of it is to restart the PC.
I have successfully played a .mov file and a commercial DVD, so some part of the video is OK.

Any Bright ideas anyone?

VLC Freezing

Postby Krafty » 31 Jul 2006 04:39

I am having issues with VLC as well. I have been using it for ages, but suddenly it has stopped working. It works ok with the smaller files i am trying to play, but when i try and play a movie or anything over 100 meg it freezes my entire system. I am running XP with SP2 on a high end laptop, 1 meg ram. when i look at task manager i can see that CPU usage is at 100% and when i end VLC it still doesn't drop back down below 100%. It is an Intel Pentium M 740 processor running at 1.73 GHz. Any ideas?

Try erasing the preferences directory. C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC. You can also erase the dvdcss directory in Application Data.

Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible.
Reboot your machine. Not hibernate!

Then try a commercial DVD and note the CPU usage at the beginning and at the end and post it here. :) Also please post the GPU in use along with video memory. If it's shared memory please say so. :)

I'm having the same issue as discussed above my system just freezes on me. What i noticed is its only after i turn off VLC for instance:

I'll play a movie and when it is done i turn off VLC and everything works fine for about 10 seconds then system just freezes. Never looked at the CPU usage but i will next time it happens

I'll also try the above solution

I'm having a similar problem. I completely reformatted my computer just under a week ago - XP SP2. All the files will play fine, but when VLC reaches the end of ANY file I put in it - audio, video, myriad of codecs - it just freezes, and then my whole system locks up. I have been able to eventually close the program, but this makes it impossible to enjoy anything let alone a playlist.

I ran a dxdiag for you guys since I really don't know which info you need :P

Thanks for any help

There are several issues here that may be the problem.

1. You reformatted your Hard Drive which generally means a reload of the operating system. In most cases Windows will not give you the most recent Video or Audio drivers to work correctly with DirectX 9c that came with SP2 for XP. Update your audio and video drivers. Also it would be smart to get the latest DirectX runtime version.

2. The most commonly over looked item when doing this yourself is that AGP or PCIe drivers are not included with the operating system and more often are not included with Microsoft's video drivers or the manufactures updates. These are specific to your Motherboards chip sets and may be obtained from the manufacture of the motherboard or from the manufacture of the computer. Sometimes they are on the website of the manufacturer of the video card but don't hold your breath.

3. People with SoundMax audio cards or chip sets seem to experience some of the most bazaar problems. I'm not sure what the real problems are with this chip set but many people come here with problems and invariably the problem ends up with the user having this chip set. So if after doing all of the above that is required and recommended by Microsoft, if you still experience problems you should probably consider trying a new audio card.

I'm assuming you mean that the drivers on the CD labeled "Drivers" that HP gave me for the purpose of reformats doesn't have the correct or most up to date drivers, however updating my video drivers has ALWAYS been an issue for this computer in that it simply cannot be done, no matter how hard I try. Given that this same computer was able to use VLC perfectly fine before the reformat and reload of the OS (which I've done about three times on this harddrive alone) I'm willing to bet that this is not the issue.

That having been said, could you please point me towards where I could update said drivers?

About as recent as reformatting? :P

The presents or absents of an AGP or PCIe driver is rather difficult to detect. Probably the best way is to start playing a commercial DVD (not sitting on a menu :)) in VLC and then open your Task manager. Look at CPU usage. If the usage is more than 1 or 2% but more like 15 to 25% you are missing the driver.

Ya! I received a set of those disks too! They do make good coasters or Frisbees though. After 2 HP machines I have discovered that the only way to resolve the conflicts that they gave you with all the free crap and all demos I didn't want or old printer drivers that interfered with the new printer drivers was to dump those disks and start over. At one point I believed that uninstalling that stuff would be enough to make it OK, but then I discovered the real reason it didn't work right. It seems HP makes these disks for a series of machines where the hardware is NOT consistent and I have found wrong drivers installed for the hardware and drivers installed where there is no hardware. From Microsoft's point of view this is a No No! Assuming you want the machine to function correctly.

Drivers are obtained from the manufacture for the specific model of the computer. HP is good about this one. The only thing that irritates me is the fine print or exceptions they make you go through to load the operating system from scratch. It must be recognized as an HP machine and in order to do this is kinda like standing on your head and touching your toes with both hands. The other method of obtaining drivers is to go to the OEM for the card in question. But if the chip set is on the motherboard and the motherboard is made by Compaq or HP you are kinda stuck with where ever they stopped revising it. However if the machine is less than 3 years old this shouldn't be a problem as most generally they continue updates for a year after the machine is out of production. I have noticed that the new models are in production for only a year now so this may change in the future.

Personally I'm going to return to building my own machines. I always knew exactly where I was at and spent less time and effort getting it right for me, than to go out and buy a major brand of computer.

Unfortunately, I cannot build a laptop. But basically what I get from reading all this is that despite the fact that I have reformatted this harddrive twice previously and VLC has worked, it doesn't now and there's not a damn thing I can do about it because the chipsets are only supported by HP, not the original manufacturers of the hardware in question. That's just brilliant. Way to facking go, HP.

It seems as though I must find some orafice to pull 3k out of for a decent desktop. Joy.

(I realize this is in no way your fault, but after having spent the past hour attempting to communicate with someone in INDIA for tech support on this POS I'm rather upset, so please excuse my venting it here. I do appreciate you taking the time to explain this when the freakin' company won't.)

Sort of Same Issue

Postby serpentine » 03 Nov 2006 01:55

I'm running a Win2K system with VLC. However, the VLC player doesn't lock up my system, it just doesn't show the video. Only hear sound.

Lock-ups occur when I try to play the same file via Windows Media Player. System just locks completely up from an input standpoint. No mouse, no keyboard. Requires a power down of system.

I did note that I recently downloaded and installed an updated driver for the on-board sound card that also installed the SoundMax software.

Hope this maybe helps!

Personally I'm going to return to building my own machines. I always knew exactly where I was at and spent less time and effort getting it right for me, than to go out and buy a major brand of computer.
Unfortunately, I cannot build a laptop. But basically what I get from reading all this is that despite the fact that I have reformatted this hard drive twice previously and VLC has worked, it doesn't now and there's not a damn thing I can do about it because the chipsets are only supported by HP, not the original manufacturers of the hardware in question.

Believe me when I say I understand your frustration. I had a hard drive fail last year and the backup disks were bad that shipped with the machine. This eventually led me down a path to the reality. It was two months ago that everything was finally resolved under the warranty.

One that I know you will love, is under the service contract for my laptop I am allowed 3 new batteries. When I went to order the 1st new battery because the old one was beginning to show signs of dieing, the paper work shuffle was very annoying, but when the first battery came in it was incorrect for my laptop, (didn't work) when the second battery came in I tested it and it was in worse shape than the original battery. I called and spoke with a supervisor who apologized and assured me it had to be an error as our company does not sell used parts. The next battery that came in was a replacement for the original and was new but again not for my computer and didn't work correctly. After going through 3 more batteries and a month in time, one of the service reps told me that all they had to offer was refurbished batteries. I said: How does one go about refurbishing a battery? Knowing full well that this is impossible! He said they send them out to another company to have this done and he had no idea. I said: You are being riped off and in turn ripping off your customers! He had no comment and this was a supervisor. I kept the best one out of the group and sent the rest back. BTW The best of the group was a little better than the original battery with an older date and serial number than the original battery, but it did work correctly.

I hope in all your frustration that this at very least got a laugh! :)

As far as your problem goes. The change for DirectX and driver requirements started with VLC 0.8.4. So anything before that should still work for you.

A thought came to me after writing this. When Microsoft released SP2 in Oct 04 they were offering updated drivers for many components. While you will never see this in automatic updates, I still do from time to time check and have received two updates recentlly for my sound card and modem. You will still need to check that your AGP driver for the video is good as that is not available from Microsoft. But you might check the updates website to see what is offered.

What did you do?

Anyways, I'm getting this same issue. Fresh install, direct x 9.0c, drivers working and everything. Yet, when I open a movie, it freezes. First the vlc locks up, then the other components get slow shortly after, and then the whole system freezes (mouse won't move). It's as if there was a looping/recursive memory leak.

I've noticed that once vlc is installed, even windows media player and winamp won't work, so I think it's something to do with a shared file like a codec or library. I dunno - all I can say is it sucks and I have to boot Linux to play the file.

There aren't any shared libraries or codecs. But most players will use the same services. Try looking at the events logs after you reboot. perhaps you can identify the service. I do know there are a few programs like Window blinds that give problems like these.
