How do you "switch to the Skins2 interface"?

You have to use the red dropdown here, and not to touch the red-crossed area

Did it exactly the same way, as you told me.
Next time I started VLC it simply crashed - just as before...

Had to use "Reset VLC defaults and quit" to make it start again.
Of course without Skins interface.

I've just downloaded 0.8.5 and have the same problem. How was it fixed for you? (I use Windows 98 so I thought it was just because of that.)

He had an unusual problem with skins. It sounds more likely you need the Unicode driver for your operating system.

May I add my complaints here, too?

Here all recent versions of VLC crash very often, too.
It's always related to LIBVLC.DLL, too. Now I tried to watch

but VLC aborts after loading the stream. I can even see the
picture for a moment before the notorious error message
appears.

Using WinXP and recent 0.8.5. here.

Any idea?

The original problem here was regarding the skins2 module which I personally have never had problems with. But your problem is with receiving a stream. When one encounters this kind of problem with a media player that supports multiple methods and formats is to separate streaming form playing by downloading the file. Then it can be determined the file type and format for audio and video and in what part of the scheme the issue is. Sometimes the Messages file will provide all you need or downloading the link will show the problem an be all you need to fix this yourself. The developers are constantly making changes and creating pop ups as they don't want the player to crash. But you can help by providing more information rather than a link that makes the devs do all the work for you.

Sorry, I don't understand the bowels of streaming media or
formats... So I'm not able to fix anything by myself using
informations from the error messages and I can determine
what formats are in the NASA TV stream as much as I can
fly a space shuttle.

The only thing I can extract from error messages is the
"XXXappcompat.txt" XP generates. It's 100kB text
which can be viewed and downloaded here:

Everything else cannot be marked, copied and pasted.

I don't know how to provide you the needed information
so I had bad luck if that doesn't help. I just saw the same
error message in this thread, mentioning the same .dll
and so I thought that could be a known issue with known
countermeasures. At least I tried...

The link appears to go to NASA TV but it makes a stop at Yahoo to pick up a schedule and a playlist and then refers to another link and will play for 2 hrs max. This will not play in VLC as it will not handle a link that refers to another link.

No, my problem is the skins -- I can't get any skins, and choosing skins2 causes crash. Everything else about VLC works. And I've got the unicode files already.

If you go to your Start menu, Programs, VideoLAN folder and tap on the VLC Media Player (skins) icon, what happens?

Assuming the player opens, go to Preferences and press Save then close the player. Now make a new shortcut with no options after VLC.EXE

If this doesn't work delete the preferences directory found in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC, Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible. A reboot wouldn't hurt at this point just in case VLC is held in memory do to a crash.

Now start over again!

Both the .asx and .qtl NasaTV links work fine in VLC here (other people on #videolan also reported that it worked durring the space shuttle's launch 1 week ago).

Of course this doesn't help people who have issues with Skins (I'd advise that you try deleting C:\Documents and Settings\<you>\Application Data\VLC )

This is very strange. The only thing I can think of is that a file within VLC may be corrupted. Try uninstalling VLC from your Control Panel's add/remove programs. Then go to C:\Program Files\VideoLAN and be sure there are no files or directories here.

Now go to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC, You can also erase the dvdcss directory in Application Data.

Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible.

Then go to VLC's main page and get a fresh copy of VLC 0.8.5 and do a reinstall.

Selecting the "VLC Media Player (skins)" icon in your Start menu, Programs, VideoLAN menu is the easiest way to set the skins module as all you need do is open preferences and press "Save" and close the player. But you do need to make a new shortcut with no options after VLC.EXE

OK, I tried all that, and the skins problem remains. I guess there's just some incompatability somewhere. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.
