When I said to try Feature Requests, I meant to look in the Feature requests section of this forum before posting to see if others had also made this request! But I moved the file for you so at very least it would be in the right place.

Is SAMR the same as AMR (adaptive multi-rate)? If so, it's being worked on. Check back in a couple of months.

Any news on this one? The latest 0.9.4 version still doesn't decode samr audio... Or is it that I don't know how to enable it? (Note that the video clips with samr audio track were recorded with a Samsung G800 cellphone, so I imagine "samr" could be some proprietary Samsung format or somethin'...)

SAMR is decodable by VLC. It is just NOT shipped because of legal issues.

Alright, so is there a place where we could legally get this friggin' samr decoder? Please drop us a hint...

Myeah, thanks. By the time I do that, I should be able to write my own samr codec

Are you sure about that ?
That was a roundabout way of saying that I don't really have time to learn how to compile my own VLC. I went through some of those instructions and my head started spinning after 20 seconds

Perhaps some other time.

Thanks for the replies anyway.

Is there any reasons why VLC can not use legally-free AMR codec implementation from http://www.penguin.cz/~utx/amr ?

What a reply !! Great.

Actually, anybody want to have support on samr can easily compile their own VLC ! I've got it on Linux-FC11 with VLC1.0+
Best thing is u get ffmpeg with opencore_amr nb/wb , u get support for amr in linux. Same thing is not very supported in windows Xp/vista.
I think compiling VLC with old amr packages should get u samr support.

Imp point to notice is : Even ffmpeg to removed support for traditionally developed 3GPP's amr_wb & amr_nb. They got it with opencore_amr . the way it went for AAC with developement of FAAC ie Free AAC ! I think, VLC going on same path, yet support for windows to come up.

We should invite some on windows devel guys from Microsoft to support their beloved OS.

Mahendra

I think the specific reference was http://www.penguin.cz/~utx/amr#legal, which states in part:
Before you decide to distribute AMR packages, you should read following notes!

These tarballs don't provide any 3GPP source code. It is downloaded from 3GPP during compilation. To use package compiled by this code, you may need a license from 3GPP.

AMR codecs incorporate several patents, held by Ericsson, Universite de Sherbrooke (VoiceAge) and Nokia. VoiceAge claims to provide patent portfolio for AMR codecs. Depending on law in your country, manufacturers and developers may need to get a license. Because it is a shared library, you may need special contract for each one application, which links against this library, directly or indirectly.

Please also note, that downloaded .doc file has a very restrictive license: No part may be reproduced except as authorized by written permission. The copyright and the foregoing restriction extend to reproduction in all media.

amr has great future
I hope it will burn in fire, after it has been stabbed to death. Bad format with stupid patents.

This is so stupid. I bought a new HTC phone and I made some video clips with it. I cannot play them anywhere except on the phone. :(
They are recorded MP4 but samr is used for the audio codec so WMP or VLC cannot play audio. Why would a phone manufacturer ship with this codec if its unplayable by anyone because of legal issues?

Saying,
"I cannot play them anywhere except on the phone. :( "
dont help !

Can you share the sample video file. If its samr, you can play it on windows vlc or realplayer. MPC with codec should also play it. There are thousands of media players in Windows ! Nokia Media player do support samr as Nokia phone create amr file recordings.

There is always way out with ffmpeg conversions ! Try it.

You can't attach a file on this forum, upload it on some free sharing site like Megaupload, Mediafire or Rapidshare.
