window properties / window position

Postby schizosmurf » 18 Jun 2006 20:36

i'm having problems getting vlc to open where i want it (top left corner "docked" at the top left of my left monitor). no matter what i put into the settings for window position it always opens in the same spot (top left corner centered on my right monitor). i tried settings of 0,0 and mutiple combiniations of positive and negative numbers in each field

any insight would be greatly appreciated

Yeah I too have same issue.. Only reason I still use Media Player Classic. Pretty stupid that a player can't remember where THE HELL it's suppose to be positioned at as well as the friggen size.

I agree, VLC should remember its position! It does when skins2 mode.

The wxWidgets interface is being replaced with a new QT4 interface. Hopefully it will resolve many issues plaguing users and should be completed for the next major release.

In the mean time (if I remember correctly) holding the shift or ctrl key while exiting forces Windows to remember the position of any program.

Starting with version 0.8.5 VLC sizes the video window or player to the resolution of the video. If you wish to over ride this open Preferences, Video and scroll down to "Windows proprieties". Then enter 781 for "Video width" and 331 for "Video height". Be sure to press "Save" and close the player. It will now act like prior versions.

Interesting notes DJ.. That just means it's getting more and more complicated to be used with a software like Girder. I have both Zoom Player and Media Player Classic setup with Girder. Since they remember their positions and size I have setup controls for.

minimize
maximize
normal
full screen toggle
volume up
volume down
skip ahead <zoom only>
skip back <zoom only>
fast rewind <zoom only>
fast forward <zoom only>
pause
play
stop

So I can use my remote to watch my videos without having to be at the desk. Now vlan because it's size and location is all over the place remote control is totally impractical because I want to have my normal set to the specific size I use when I select it so that I can check other windows for any incomming messages, ect. Currently I can hit the normal window size button and glance to see if I have messages comming in, email, or message from irc because I have the normal window still large enough to view the video but not in the way of the other windows.

Hopefully the new interface will fix these problematic issues.

i'll have to try that out

this works upto a point for me. i can only get the height to go so far. like i run my screen res at 2560x1024 (1280x1024 on dual monitors), so a height setting of 1024 should have it overlapping (or underlapping really if there is a such a word) the start bar, but it doesnt. it sizes it to "fit" on the desktop, approx. 1000 pix height
dunno if this is a windows thing or a vlc thing. but i supose i can live with ~25 less pixels on my video

Hey! I just gave you the numbers of the defaults for prior versions so it would appear like you were used to it. Where you want to go from there is ultimately up to you. :P
