VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output)

Postby Condor » 01 Apr 2006 15:10

Hey!
I dont know what this is, but sometimes when i play VCD or DVD's this message comes up(in a new window):

VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output)

Some Info:
-------------
* Windows XP Home (with all upgrades except SP2)
* Geforce 4 128mb
* 512 ram
* VLC Mediaplayer 0.8.4 (WX Widgets Interface)
* Divx and Xvid Codecs
* DirectX 9.0c

Got this message today when playing:
-------------------------------------------

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)TS KVCD(TUS Release)
Exactly 00:34:46 in the film.

Hope this is enough info to somebody who can figure it out.

Btw. i know KVCD's is made to be played on standalone DVD players, but this KVCD Group also says that it will work on VLC.

I'm not quite sure what you mean?? This is another window?? or warning pop up?? The method used to display video is "VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output)". Assuming your equipment is capable and is shown at the top of every non embedded window that VLC opens for Video.

Unfortunately, you are gong to need to be more descriptive in what you are trying to do and or why you feel this may be in error.

Hi,

I have the same problem...VLC open a new Window - WindowDescription:hardware YUV DirectX output -

I have a *.mpg with two tracks...encoded by TMPGEnc

When I open the *.mpg movie with VLC, I saw track1 in the main window and track2 in a second window. The second Window is the hardware YUV DirectX output...

I have experienced a problem with VCDs or KVCDs where VLC seems to believe there is more than one video and or audio track, but it is erroneous. This does not happen with standard MPEG 1 or any variety of MPEG 2 files. I suppose it could be some kind of encoding problem. VLC would still recognize and play a .dat file if it were renamed .mpg, I think WMP will also. But I have never experienced two windows opening. I would suggest resetting your preferences.

It would also be nice to know what mode you are in IE embedded or non embedded and I assume you are using the wxWidgets interface and not a skin. The version of VLC may also be helpful.

VLC 0.8.5 final has been released and is available on the main page.

From what you described it sounded like you are using the embedded mode. This presents video within the player. Non embedded mode presents video in a separate window. When the separate window appears. the upper right corner always says: hardware YUV DirectX output

When VLC was installed, you received several methods for opening VLC in the way of icons or shortcuts in your Start menu VideoLAN folder and one on your desktop. If there is no options in the shortcut IE nothing after VLC.EXE the preferences will be at there default. Any options will override some defaults. Personally, I believe this is what the Desk Top shortcut should be. As I remember, the real default is the non embedded mode. This also confuses people that want to use skins.

Embedded mode may be selected or not in Preferences, Interface, General, wxWidgets

But this does assume you have fixed the shortcut as suggested.

YUV DirectX issue

Postby BanedonSkyRider » 30 May 2006 02:08

I have this issue and it is driving me nuts.

I'm trying to play a .MOV file and it keeps playing the first few seconds of video in the player then opening up a new window entitled VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output) and playing the rest of the film in that.

I followed the advice detailed in the previous post, truning off embedded and that got me two such windows turning up. So I had the player and one YUV window with nothing in them and another YUV windows playing the film.

What I would really like to do is play the film in the background as a wallpaper. All I get from that is the above along with a black background screen (icons still present though).

I cannot find anything in proferences to cover this.

This is my setup if it helps:

AMD Dual Core 4200 Processor
2GB Dual Channel DDR400 RAM
MSI K8N SLI Motherboard
Two SLI'd XFX Geforce 6800XT PCI-E graphics cards
Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! 5.1
Windows XP Prof SP2
Nvidia drivers v8.1.8.5
DirectX 9.0c

Hope someone can help

Mike

Hello,

I've just wasted a whole two hours making FireFox understand mms:// links in the address bar, after Windows Media stopped working on an old Win2k laptop.

I only have one problem left, which relates to this post: after setting the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS\shell\open\command to its proper value: "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" "%L" (yay), VideoLan does open the YUV window 9 times out of 10. Closing that window results in the stream being closed as well.

When I change the VLC settings not to convert YUV-RGB, I get a "software RGB DirectX output" window instead, with duplicate video contents.

This behavior does not occur when the stream url is embedded.

Is there something to be done to remove the second window?

Thanks ;-)

i got the same prob as what BboyWicked said. The VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output) black window pops up and then if i minimize the video file or close the VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output) wndow, the movie either stops playing, or a i get a black video screen.

And the video file I am watching does have two audio channels, and it is a dat file. Anyway help would be greatly appreciated!!!

VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output)

Postby David2006 » 29 Jun 2006 12:20

I'm getting this too. I can't find a solution but, following the rule that 'It's always the last thing you did', I may have identified the cause of the problem.

Last night I found it necessary to do what I rarely do, and enable access to Windows Media Player. Then I disabled it again. Today, anything with a wmv extension produces this in VLC. This is probably the first time I've ran WMP since setting up the system, and I can't find a way of fixing this. No doubt there's a solution buried deep in in Microshite's 'Knowledge Base'. No doubt it 'enhances the exciting functionality' of the pig-ugly piece of crap they produce, and no doubt it 'has to do with security' and 'there are no plans to issue a fix at this time'. No doubt there is a way around it, but I'm not the man for the job and, frankly, would rather spend an hour doing a clean build and never turn WMP on again.

Needless to say, these files play 'perfectly' in WMP, though even in 'full screen' I'm stuck with title, playlist and controls on screen even after turning those view options off. What a piece of trash that is. The files do play OK in Media Player Classic, the other player I use; between MPC and VLC I can play almost anything, apart from dodgy Quick Time encodes that turn out to only work properly on my Mac, which is another story. (And where VLC won't play wmvs at all, BTW.)

But I am sure that's it's in the direction of WMP/XP's propietorial handling of Direct X that you need to look.

This may be a stupid question at this point, but has anyone tried to shut off the Video overlay within VLC and then use the Software YUV DirectX output? It's marked "Use Hardware YUV->RGB conversions" Might be worth a try to see if the same problem exists.

Also in case anyone has missed it, the latest directx runtime is available, dated 6/06.

Okay I've been wondering about this for awhile actually, and while bringing it up in a support thread in another forum (frankly I forgot this one even existed), someone there graciously linked me to this here.

So, I followed the instructions given about the Video Tab and whatnot, and while it inexplicably didn't still work on the first try, it did seem to do it okay on the second. However, am I understand this correct that you need to do it fresh again each time you attempt to open the particular video? Because I closed it out, opened it up again and I had to start all over. I suppose I assumed doing the steps would've changed it for good.

Hey, everybody! I tried all the recommendations from this thread. I was getting the same pop up window even when I disabled the direct x thing and changed to windows GDI output and disabling the video overlay. I did all those, but it kept popping up. Then I set the visualizations (under the audio tab) to default. Pop up window GONE!

Yes. Would there be a command line option limiting the number of video tracks, so that you can launch sources notorious for having this problem (like online streams) with the said command line options ?

No. There is a trac ticket for one.

Is there any progress on this? I use it mostly for watching DVDs and after a random amount of time a new screen will popup with the title "VLC (hardware YUV DirectX output)". This is the case for almost every DVD. I'll have to switch back to the main window to get video back. The popups multiply and I can end up with 15 or so of them.

I don't know if the issue is related, but the number of audio tracks will spontaneously multiply. At the beginning of the DVD there'll be, say, 4 audio tracks. Then after a few minutes of watching, the sound cuts off when VLC player switches to another audio track. When I go to select the original audio track, there'll be maybe 20 new audio tracks appeared.

I'd really appreciate any tips on this as it makes VLC player unusable and otherwise it's by far the best player out there.

Thanks

The audio track multiply thingy sound like a new bug. Does Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) complain something during playback? And you use Media -> Open disc... to open the DVDs?

Yes, I use Media->Open Disc to open the DVDs. I'll check to see what messages appear with Verbosity at 2.

OK. I just tested it quickly. Here is a pic of the multiplying audio tracks (it started off with just english and disable):

I've got the message log, but it's big. What am I looking for? Should I post it?

has anybody found a fix for the blank pop up window. I'm only having the issue with mov files. I tried the resetting video to disable then track one, but for me that was only a temporary fix that lasted as long as the video.

That MOV file has multiple video/image tracks. VLC will automatically play them all, there isn't any permanent VLC side fix for that.
