I just bought the m-audio revolution 7.1 card and a set of logitech z5300 speakers. I first tried the apple dvd player, and only have the option to use the digital out for pass-through, too bad the speakers canonly hook up to the analog outs. Then I tried VLC, my favorite player on the planet, I do get 5.1 channel output but not to the correct channels. The center sound is coming out of the left-rear speaker, and its not the connections, the sound levels show in the revolution control panel. I contacted m-audio about the apple dvd player, but I would rather use VLC.

Does anyone know if/where I can get the m-audio vlc player?

Fixing mac ac-3 problems

I could be tempted to loan an Audiophile USB if I would be assured that
1. It would be returned.
2. Someone would actually address the problem.
thanks,
Sam
merci!

Perhaps there is another device, other than the Sonica, that might work with VLC and dd5.1. Any unknown newly released modules that you are aware of?

We poor old Mac users, all of us, cannot obtain dd5.1 unless we go to a G5 (I think, but do not own one.)

This dilema was solved beautifully with your software, and now it is gone. What a shame, purely heartbreaking for us who MUST HAVE it but CANT GET IT.

Regardless, thanks for your help.

Apple DVD player now works with sonica in 5.1 mode!

Postby Ti-maniac » 28 Feb 2004 21:39

While examining the Sonica web site I noticed that it now says:

OS 10.3 required for Dolby Digital and DTS pass-through using Apple DVD Player

To my surprise, there is actually a setting in the prefs to allow digital dolby pass through in the Apple DVD player, and totally to my surprise it works (on my G4)!!!!

Edit: It is times like this that really make one feel STUPID! Arghhh.

It doesn't matter anymore. Apple DVD player works with Sonica now, and you don't need to use VLC to obtain dd5.1 for standard 480p DVDs if you use a Mac.

Now if you are trying to play HD material, this may be one of only a few players.

So why the frown?

The point is that apple dvd player has HORRIBLE playback quality even on my Dual G5 with Radeon 9600.

VLC dvd playback is FAR superior, but being a HT addict, I cannot see a movie without DolbyDigital.

DJ: are you aware of this? (from slashdot)

"If you thought Apple's online dev resources were already the best out there, they just got better. Apple has announced the launch of their new ADC Reference Library. Named features are: powerful search options, added navigation, 'Getting Started; docs on key technologies, and a more consistent organization. Impressively, the first search I ran in their search engine on a painful Mach-O dev issue I've been fighting for the last week turned up the key obscure tech info I needed!" Meanwhile, skrysakj writes "Apple has launched a new Reference Library. I always thought their help/references for Developers was spotty (either non-existent or dead on) so this should be a welcome change."

the URL is:http://developer.apple.com/referencelibrary/

I hope this can be helpful!

I WANT to enjoy the wonderful video quality of VLC with a Dolby Digital soundtrack!!!

Are there any other devices that I can use to get 5.1ch optical output?

I'm running 10.3.3 with the Transit USB and using those settings it almost works...it is really choppy but it's outputing ac3. M-Audio only supports up to 10.3.2, so I can only assume that the update screwed things up.

i don't know what apple did in 10.3, but the changes were serious enough to break VLC and mplayer. A teammember with a 5:1 device would be a first requirment to fix this. A teammember actually doing the work would be a second (this is the tough one).

actually, the audio works great with 10.3 on G4s,only on G5s it crashes.
I noticed that when it crashes, everything that uses audio files (iTunes for example) doesn't play anything ..but if I play a DVD with DVD Player the audio goes again, no problems.... :?: do you know why?

Acutally DVD Player outputs DD5.1 quite well within 10.3.3 using a Sonica (what is Transit USB?). However I know of the "choppy" condition to which you refer. You need to go back into the prefs and get it to work with System Sound Output, restart DVD Player, and then reset it to Digital Out M-audio and restart it again. That usually fixes the problem.

Sorry about this VLC, this is sort of getting off topic just talking about apple DVD player, and m-audio, however, if VLC was able to output 5.1 like it used to do, we wouldn't have this problem. I know its Apple's fault. It always is!

the point is that if VLC could output to SPDIF audio ports, we suddenly would have a Home Theater level dvd player for Mac.

The guys at HTMUG are all waiting for this.

Well, apparently noone is interested enough to actually do some coding.

I'm sure if you have such a device and put a lot of work into it, you might get it to work.
Reason i can't get it to work is that i don't have specs AND i don't have the hardware.

If I COULD code, I would spend night AND day trying to get my spdif work.

Too bad I am a coding illiterate.

Got it working with DVD player!

Postby Guest » 17 Apr 2004 22:05

You were right, to get 5.1 working without choppiness in DVD Player one must:

1. Set the default soundcard for the OS to something OTHER than the Transit (or Sonica).
2. Set the Transit to output to AC-3.
3. Set the DVD player to output to the Transit.

I think the choppiness came from the system outputing its sounds at the same time as the AC-3 was being sent.

BTW the Transit is a simpler version of the Sonica. Or at least it looks that way.

Could people with 10.3 try out this build: http://sidekick.student.utwente.nl/videolan/vlc.tar.gz

It has a patch that was contributed by a user. It allows him to use his Motu 828.

It might help others as well?????

Same as before, PCM ok if launched in PCM.

Switch to 5.1 causes the 'screaming noise', and unable to go back to PCM without relaunch.

But thanks for still thinking about us!
