range parameter has no effect

Hi,
I m using a VLC-0.8.4 server , linux and using RTSP.
All methods are working fine, server is responding to all the requests as expected, except that when I specify some range with the "Range" parameter in the PLAY request it does not seem to be working. It has no effect , the server streams the media from start to end.
As VLC does not support forward and rewind , i was thinking of using play with some offset as an alternative, but range parameter has dissappointed me. The server doesnt specify range anywhere in the response to PLAY.
Can somebody help?
