vlc.0.8.4a and above don't run on Win98 (unicows.dll)

Postby Filmegucker » 01 May 2006 15:21

I have installed vlc.0.8.4a and vlc.0.8.5 on my old Win98 system but both refuse to start due to a missing unicows.dll. Up to version 0.8.1 I did not have this problem.

After I had downloaded unicows.exe for Win98 from the official Microsoft website and installed it, both vlc-versions crash on start.

Does anyone have the same problem and is there a fix? Otherwise I suggest that the requirement for unicows.dll is dropped from vlc at least for Win9x.

Greetings
Roland

You'll have to install MSLU from microsoft on Windows 95/98/Me systems starting with VLC 0.8.5. Note that support for this currently doesn't work in the test3/test4 releases but it will be fixed in 0.8.5 final.

To which folder should the MSLU files for Win Me be placed?

This is a pain in the arse for those of us who lack resources to upgrade HW to move to XP reliably - bang goes another useful piece of SW

What are you talking about? If you don't have unicows.dll, install MSLU and you are all set.

It seems either C:\Windows, C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 will work. By default MSLU installs under C:\Windows\System, I think.

Many thanks to those who posted advice on installing the MSLU. 0.8.5 is now running great on my old Win98 system. Cool! :D

I have windows 98 se and I installed unicows.dll into C:\Windows\System32 and it worked fine. Don't know if that is the case with all windows 98 se operating systems.
